| Does Anyone Have or have heard of a dog being afraid of the dark? When we got Tootsie the end of last month, we were putting her in a cage at night and letting her stay out with us during the day(she's 6 1/2 mos now). She would go nuts when we would put her in the cage at night and would cry all night. I've let her start sleeping out in the family room with the other dogs now(about 5 or 6 nights ago). Hubby puppy proofed out here so she couldn't get to any wires, but, we've noticed she sleeps almost all day and figured out lastnight that she's probably awake all night, as as soon as we turn off the lights to go to bed, she comes flying out there to us and asks really strange. Any suggestions? It is pitch black out here at night time, and we're wondering if maybe we should put maybe 3 or 4 night lights in? I've never had a dog thats afraid of the dark before |

| I dont think she is afraid of the dark, maybe its because she knows its nightime!! And knows she isnt going to see her mummy until its morning thats why she is acting strange!!! you havent had her long, but iam sure in time she will settle!! sometimes they are more inteligent than we think!! | i have one that is afraid of the dark. Won't go out to potty at night . Sorry, I don't have the answer but your baby is new so she will probably get used to it or you can try a nightlite. |

| I don't think it's because she wants to be with me, as when she did that lastnight, I actually took her in the bedroom with me and laid her in the bed with me, she was fine, and then, I turned the light off in there and she went balistic in there too. This has just started happening. I did e-mail the breeder(she hasn't had time to get back with me yet, although, I know she will) to see if she used night lights or left lights on for the pups at night. Just breaks my heart to see her afraid of anything. |

| Dogs aren't afraid of the dark it's a natural thing but ... they do make associations and when it's dark and they are left alone they can make that association and being isolated and alone is what dogs fear the most they are naturally pack animals and can become very insecure when left alone

| I just found a site, and dogs can be spooked by the dark. I also got an e-mail back from the breeder, she said she herself is afraid of the dark, and would leave a lot of nightlights plugged in, in the room where she kept the pups, so, tonight, we're buying a night light, hopefully that will help out. We couldn't figure out why she is wanting to sleep all day, now we think it's because she's awake all night. Hopefully this will help |

| My toy poodle is afraid of the dark! I go outside with him at night when he needs to go out. Also, my in-laws standard poodle is afraid of the dark. I was beginning to think it was a poodle thing - but maybe not. |

| I agree because we live where it's so dark we need night lights to find the bathroom. That wasn't a problem when we lived in town.

| I am thinking it maybe a combo. of the dark and being in a crate, or by itself. I'd use nightlights your puppy. Also plenty of reassurance. It is really dark where i live too, and is 9 months old. She is always with me though, so I have not had any fear issues with her. i think yorkie's rather be with their owners, and have that connection all the time instead of being all alone. Especially as a puppy. My Suzi behaves like a little baby sometimes, SO I really feel that she just wants to be with us, and have our attention.
