Thor's Human Donating Member | Change his name or not? Hi, everyone! I have a question about my yorkie. I have never posted his name here because I've been slightly paranoid that his former owner might be on here and read some of the unflattering things I've said about her, even though it's a long shot. Anyway, she is not a dog owner anymore, so I'm 99% sure I'm safe. Anyway, I have never liked my guy's name. Now that I know his owner is leaving, I have been thinking about changing it. I volunteer at a rescue, so I see that these dogs get different names, sadly more than once sometimes if they are returned. The dogs seem to learn their new names pretty quickly, so I feel like it's okay, at least in certain situations. However, to be honest, while my yorkie is adorable and fun, I don't think he's that smart. Maybe I'm just not a good trainer, but regardless, let's say I've had mixed success teaching him new things. He definitely recognizes his name now, so I feel like maybe it would be asking for trouble to throw this new intellectual task on him. What do you think? His old name is Teacup. I would like to re-name him March. Why March? Well, I think it's more masculine, and I like "month" names, like how girls can be named April, May, June. I've known a few Augusts, and I always thought that was really pretty. |

| Change it to something you like. We changed Sammy's name and she's definitely more cute than smart and she figured it out It will be fine. I'm glad you got to keep your little guy! P.S. Mine have at least 6 nicknames each and they respond to all of them. Trust me it's fine!

| I think it's fine to change it to something you like and "fits" him. I will be changing my new boy's name as soon as I figure out what I want it to be. I'm not fond of the name the rescue gave him...

| I think it would be fine to change it..(now I'm thinking of an old "Gilmore Girls" episode where she wanted to change her dog's name ) If your worried maybe you could call him both for a while ...Like March Teacup then slowly drop the teacup ? I'm pretty sure either way he will figure it out ...and if in doubt , add a treat to the mix....they seem to get MUCH smarter then

| Zoe's name was Darcy when she came to us. Peppee's was Peppee. I decided to leave it since he was already 5 months old by the time I got him. The two babies from their litter were named by us and the new owners didn't change them..Molly & Mason. If you don't like his name then I would change it. I kind of wished I would have changed Peppee's name but a bit too late for that now.

| I'd change it! He'll catch on. My dogs have all responded to several nicknames as well as their name too.

| I love the name March. That is very unique. I've changed dogs names before, little puppies to years old adults, the smart and not so smart have all figured it out. Like cholesMama said, add treats to the mix and it won't be long before he'll figure it out.

| New Mama? New Name!! Toby was 18 months old and the foster mom changed his name. She didn't think the old name fit. We like the name Toby, but we have at least 5 nick names. |

| Of course Smokey was a lot younger, but his original name was Coby. The lady we got him from renamed him Smokey and we just left it only because he had already been through enough with be transferred from 5 places in his short 6 months of life. Now usually we just call him Mokey and he responds to a lot of names... lol

| AKC does allow to go online and download a form to officially change their names now. It costss 25. I think and the dogs name can be changed providing he has never been bred or shown with points. |

YT 500 Club Member | Maybe he is just embarrassed by his name. Teacup is not very manly. I say change it to a name you like and one that compliments him. Then you both will feel better!
