| E-Collar I can't deal with this anymore!!! Archie HATES his e-collar. He can't eat out of his regular food bowl, he keeps bumping into doorways, people, etc. He can't get to scratch behind his ear or do anything! All he does is lay on his side because that's all he CAN do. And the vet said to leave it on for 7 - 10 days! I just can't bear the thought of him having to keep that thing on. We can't even take him out for proper walks because his leash is a harness and it won't go over his head. So...with your helpful advice, I will make the big decision. Can I take it off? He was just neutered, and they put the e-collar on dogs that are prone to licking themselves, but I noticed that Archie is able to lick himself with the collar on anyway. I am thinking to keep an eye on him and just train him not to lick it by telling him No! 7-10 days seems excessive, too. How long did your dog take to heal? E-collars are SO HORRIBLE! Why couldn't just put something on the stitches that makes it taste horrible or put some sort of band-aid-y sort of thing instead of a giant lampshade around his head. |

| Ecollar , before you remove the collar....ask your vet if you can use a topical agent around the stitches such as apple bitter........as a stop lick help, that was what was recommended by my vet after spaying my Gracie, I was lucky and did not have to use it.......I can't imagine Gracie tolerating an Elizabethan collar very well..........is that routine procedure???? I'm sure your baby is miserable |

| You might be surprised that Archie will leave his stitches alone with the E-collar off. Schatzie being she just had surgery, her incision is about 4 1/2 inches long. Other than licking it now and then she has pretty much ignored them. I think I had to tell her "no" only a couple times to not bite at her stitches. Instinct is going to make them lick the stitches, they want to heal themselves and I don't think that should bring any harm. Schatzie's stitches look wonderful and her incision is healing extreamly well, it's been a week today infact. She get's her stitches out next Tuesday. Good luck and let us know how he does if you decide to remove the E-collar.

| I would definitely consult the vet! Toto, like Schatzie, didn't bother her stitches. Perhaps the vet will allow removal if you will be able to watch Archie round the clock ... maybe he could just wear it at night when you are sleeping to insure he won't bite at his stitches? Haven't been in this situation so all I can really do is speculate what I would do. Good luck!

| Tatum was spayed a few months ago and knowing that boys and girls have different incision spots, I just wonder if they could have used the kind of stitches Tatum had on your Archie. Tatum had wire stitches. It was pretty strange but instead of being soft, they were real fine wires cut pretty short. I think that is a really great idea - it kept Tatum from licking on the incision. The first time she encountered the wire with her tongue, I think she decided she would just leave it alone. Has anyone else's vet used these kind of stitches? Anyway, so I can't give any advice on the e-collar since she didn't have to wear one but good luck. Hope it goes well.

| Archie's got those stitches that dissolve, so you can't see them to begin with...how am I supposed to know they've healed?! He's starting to make the e-collar into a toy when he goes outside. He sticks his neck out and scoops up snow in it. He gets food stuck on it all the time! It's really ridiculous...with all the science and technology they MUST come up with something better than a lampshade! We decided we'd leave the e-collar on through the weekend and then figure out what to do because honestly, the vet said to keep it on and I don't really feel like having to go through the surgery again. but it doesn't make it any less of a ludicrous invention...And then...they've got these crazy $400 e-collars! Not to mention e-collars for rats, mice, parakeets, you name it...And best of all, Archie is still humping stuff... |

| Cecilia had the dissolving stitches too. She didn't lick her stitches and the vet never even mentioned using anything like a collar. I know that she is capable of reaching that area just fine any time she wants so she could have licked if she wanted. I would just take it off and if you can't be watching him put it back on, like if you have to leave or at night and stuff. I am not a vet of course but it seems like a very unnnecessary nusaince to your baby. |

| Hi, just wanted you to know that im having the same with mitzy. Poor little things, they dont look too comfy neither. I had to sign something at our vets, that if i didnt leave a collar on, then they would not be responsible for anything that happened. I guess to cover them if she scratched the stitches out, and it became infected. Im off to the vets this morning, to check things are going well with the healing preocess, and if all is well then i may take the collar off for a bit and see how she gets on. |

| Bentley got neutered a couple of months ago and they did not give us a special collar for him to wear. He didn't have a problem with the licking. Every time he looked like he might lick it I told him "no" and he wouldn't do it. Bentley had special surgical glue instead of stiches and after a couple of days there wasn't much danger of it coming open (the big thing was not to bathe him for a week). |

| e-collar Had my two male yorkies neutered two weeks ago today. When I went to pick them up they had put Bengie (usually the low key one) in an e-collar and told me to keep it on him for several days cause he was licking his incision. After one day, he looked so miserable, I took it off. He did try to lick himself once or twice, I sternly told him NO and that was it. He healed fine and both boys are doing very well. |
