| New Puppy Question - Male vs. Female I am looking to adopt a Yorkshire Terrier puppy into our family. I was wondering if you could give me any insight into whether or not to get a female or male puppy. I've heard quite a bit about males marking their territory around the house and I wanted to know if I should be concerned about that. I look forward to your responses. Thanks in advance! |

| I know you can help train the males using belly bands. Its a wrap that covers their 'area' so they cant go until you take it off. I have also heard that males can be more affectionate that girls. I have a female yorkie. I originally was going to get a male, but Triss kind of 'picked me' She was the only one of the 4 in the litter who paid any attention to me. She sat on my lap and licked my face every time I would visit the breeder. The breeder said she didn't do that with any other visitor, so I think me and Triss were just meant to be.

| Male/Female I have both; Jack is very much on his own but he will check and see if you are around and loves to be praised. and yes he gives kisses. He picked me also out of 4-others.Mind you he was my first yorkie so I did not know about anything about them. He wears a belly band, which I think it makes him more handsome. Bella, on the other hand she is a Baby. I mean that in every sense of he word. She screams and she wants to be picked up All the time and she follows me everywhere (even potty). Well don't get me wrong I would not have it any other way I love them both and its all my my fault for spoiling them. But they are my babies. So to answer your question I would go with a female. Hope this helps Cheryl |

| I had a male pom who wasn't neutered and he marked everything and everyone. Baxter has been fixed and doesn't mark. |

| I have only owned males. Not all Yorkies but only males. If your male is neutered at six months he should not mark in your home. I have never had a dog mark in my home or anyone else's when they went with me for a visit. They were all neutered by six months tho. Male dogs are very loving and dedicated to their owner. They are not moody and can be lap dogs too. I get kisses all the time from Buddy. I have read that females get attached to males if there are male and females in the house and males get attached to the ladies in the house. I guess there are always exceptions. Go see the pups and make a decision after that. One might just pick you instead of you picking one. Good luck with your decision. Last edited by ARCHIE; 12-12-2008 at 12:46 PM. |

| I have a male. He also sort of picked me. Waddled his little puppy but right up and curled up n my lap and feel asleep. I was sunk. Hes not a real lap dog. He'd rather curl up right next to me then on me. He's also pretty independent around the house. He's not always underfoot, but generally in the area. Hes only 4 months old, so no marking issues yet, BUT he is a big humper So far only one person, but he has a stuffed bear which he is quite fond of Hope you find the best baby you can male or female! |

| Get one of each. They're small, will keep each other company, and play with each other. Squirt is in tact, and Gus is neutered. Neither mark. I'm looking to add a third, and will get another male. I prefer the male look, but the females are cute too.

| When I* first saw Twinkle I fell in love her without knowing whether she was male or female. She's not a lapbaby but she does like to cuddle up next me and is loyal little girl and definitely favours me and my daughters to my husband I think these kinds of traits are often down to personality rather than gender. It sounds like you can't really go wrong with either male or female! Good luck with your decision xxx xxx

| I have a little girl and I adore her. When I set out to look for a Yorkie I already had in mind that I ONLY wanted a little girl. She is a total flirt and whenever there is a male around she completely forgets that I am there! lol She can also get moody and she is more playful and active than most little boys that I have met. I do plan to get a little boy in the upcoming year because from what I have seen they tend to be more loyal than little girls and they seem to be more affectionate. But I think the best advice (as some people have already said) is to let your baby pick you. Once you go to the breeder one will definitely pick you...and you'll fall in love...regardless of whether its a boy or a girl

| I have 6 dogs, 5 of them females. there are pros and cons to both. My hubby always preferred the females, but, I did fall in love with my little boy and got him, got him on a Sunday(he was 5 1/2 mos old) and had him neutered the next day. He has never lifted his leg in the house, he's trained to pee pads and just stands and kind of leans when he pees in the house, now, if he's outside running, he will lift his leg, likes to show hes a big boy. I think boys tend to be more loving, of course, our new little girl is very loving too. I guess the choice is yours. If you get a little boy, just try and make sure he's neutered before he starts lifting his leg, and then hopefully he never will lift it. |

YT Graphic Artist Donating Member | I have both - 2 boys and three girls. IMO, it's true when they say that boys are more affectionate, and girls are more ... well, "moody". Now, don't get me wrong, every dog is different, and my girls just happen to be very affectionate too, but there's just something about a boy with his Momma. Mine cuddle more, and follow me close. My girls are more independant (women do have their own minds, and can be stubborn at times) My girls are also dedicated to my husband, so I guess that saying is true too! When I had to choose my first yorkie, I had the same dilema. I went to see the litter, and Shadow was one of 5. That day, he was in the playpen with his siblings (who were all sleeping when I arrived). Shadow was the first to wake up, and as soon as I picked him up, he started kissing me like crazy. At that moment I had decided on a boy. So, maybe one will make the decision for you! Either way, you're going to fall in love!
