| I learned today why you travel with your dog IN a crate! Layla and I were headed to the bank (what i THOUGHT was the right bank.. wrong bank once i got there.... what a day) There is a highway that runs north south but there are lights so that the east/west traffic can cross- and its not REALLY a high way- the speed limit is 90 km/hr.. but fast enough. Usually you never get the light (i'm travelling east west wanting to cross this highway) so you have to sit for a bit at a red waiting for it to turn however, today as I was appoaching it turned green- bonus! so i hadn't slowed down and kept right on going- well so did a school bus that was travelling north south on this highway. I had to slam the breaks on or otherwise we would have been destroyed by the bus- and THANK GOD i had Layla IN her crate buckled in- otherwise- she woudl have gone flying. We came very close to being hit by a school bus travelling quite fast- and had we been hit- I know she would have been in much better condition because she was in her crate and her crate was buckled in. I'm still so shaken up because we just came SO close- but Lay's fine I know when we travel with our dogs on our laps we think nothing will happen but people drive through red lights every day and sadly- if both Layla and I are horribly hurt- the paramedics are going to fix me, before they fix her. Please consider next time you are in your car- buckle your babies in- because they ARE our babies. |

| That is a very good reason to keep them in a crate! Thank goodness you are both safe and didn't get hit!

| marci, im so glad u both are fine.. thank god... every weekend i think the same thing when i have to travel to the b/f's house an hour away.. my heart is in my mouth.. you will be doing 60 mph and all of a sudden down to 30 in a second.. very scarey... i strap lexi into her car seat, she hates it.. the whole ride she is looking at me panting like crazy, drives me absolutely insane... she wont look out the window, just stares at me... very important to have them buckled in.... lexi loves to be with me on my lap.. as im a block away, i will tell her to come to my lap.. please be very careful.. it only takes a second... i worry about that all the time

| Oh thank goodness you are both okay! I was worried for a minute when I clicked on the link that you'd had an accident! I don't like my girls to travel loose in the car either incase of an accident.

| What a scare! Thank goodness you are both alright.. I have sometimes sat Pixie on my lap in the car..although she is often sick..so its not the best idea...and if we braked suddenly I dread to think..she so little too she would certainly go flying! after your warning I won't be tempted to do it again..

| omg! i am so glad that you guys are ok. and thank you for posting this. i do travel with milu in my lap all the time when i drive, but now that you mention it, i have to agree that it's not a good idea to have her in my lap when i drive. i better go get milu her own seat belt. (that's what you mean right?) what's the best way to travel with them in the car?

With Layla I put her in her crate sideways on the seat of the car- then i wrap the seat belt around the crate - above the ledge that connects the top to the bottom so the seat belt wont slip off and then i do up the seat belt. | |

| So glad that story had a happy ending! I was in a bad accident with my 8 week old toy poodle many years ago and was nervous driving with him after that. Don't know if they had car seats back then even. Tatum has had a car seat that sits on my Tahoe's center console ever since I've had her. I feel so much better having her buckled in. We buckle in, right? Every animal parent should give their dog that same protection too.

My Tiny Treasures Donating Member | wow how scary. I wouldnt want to use a "crate" (My preference) but I do use a car seat with them buckled in. Last edited by Breny; 11-26-2008 at 03:59 PM. |
