| Chewie don't want to eat Since bringing Chewie home the only thing I have gotten him to eat was a small amount of cooked hamburger and a small amount of cooked chicken. His former family was feeding him Science Diet, they sent some home with us but he still won't eat, and it's been 3 days since he went poop. I'm really beginning to worry....the vet says overall he's fine and said that we don't need the liver compromised diet, (he had a shunt as a puppy, now he's 4 years old) Any suggestions on what I can do to make my baby eat? |

| Maybe he's pining for them. He'll come around. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Maybe you could get him on a good dog food and at first just mix it with a little chicken. Hopefully when he settles in he will start eating. Maybe try feeding him by hand to get him comfortable with you and see what happens. Hopefully others will have some advice who have been in your situation.

| If your vet did not do bloodwork, there's no way the vet can tell you with certainty that your Chewy is fine. Constipation and picky eating(not wanting meat or feeling sick after eating meat) are consistent with liver issues. I would have bloodwork run because this dog has a history of liver shunt. It's better to be safe than sorry. If it turns out that everything is okay and the BAT and blood panel come back normal, then you know you're not dealing with issues due to the liver. If they do come back normal, then you know what you're dealing with. JMO

| His former family forwarded all his med records to me, his last bile test was normal no high levels at all. He hasn't had any issues with his liver since his surgery. My only concern is why won't he eat...Well he'll eat people food just not his dog food. He cleared out another hamburger at lunch, but I don't want to be a short order cook for him...LOL What else could I use to entice his appetite? He won't even eat his canned food. |

| I know nothing about liver shunt except that it is common for Yorkies to be diagnosed with that disorder. He sounds like a finicky eater to me. When he is hungry, then he will eventually eat. My Shih Tzu pulled that stunt too. She skipped meals until I gave her people food. I fell for it a couple of times but not anymore. My dog went two days without eating any food until she decided to eat her dog food. When I gave her human food with the dog food, she picked over it. My dog had to stop eating people food until she developed an appetite for dog food. Good Luck! |

| This dogs should NOT be eating MEAT as a primary source of food. Especially NOT hamburgers, you could be posioning him.... This dog had a Liver Shunt that was repaired, it doesn't mean he should resume to a normal dogs diet and lifestyle. If you want this dog to be happy and healthy and live a long life, you have to make adjustments because of his LS history. When was his last BAT done and what was the post number? Hills L/D Canned or Royal Cain Hep. 14 (Dry) is what is recommended for LS dogs. He should also be on supplements to aid his liver and not stress it again. | I agree - he is probably pining. If he eats hamburger - he isn't sick, he's playing you - he'd rather eat that than his crunchies. Smoky has pulled that on me before resulting in a useless vet trip. I've decided he is a Yorkshire TERROR. LOL, but I still love him. The vet said: a dog will eat when it finally gets hungry enough, a can on the other hand will starve if it doesn't want to eat what's offered, or go find something else.

| I really, really have to disagree with all comments about him just 'holding out' etc...And I really, really have to disagree with the Vet's comments that his diet shouldn't be carefully selected for him since he had a LS as a pup. I hope I don't come off sounding mean or anything, I truly am just trying to help...I too have a baby that has liver issues Vets are great, but they don't know it all and most of them don't know too much about nutrition and they haven't done too much studying about dogs that had LS and how they are doing later down the road. LS is a scarey thing, and while his shunt may have been repaired, it doesn't mean he is 100% in the clear. I think you truly want the BEST for him. I think you are already IN LOVE with him. With that being said, I hope you take this advice. Join this yahoo group: DogLiverDisease : Dog Liver Disease The people there are just like you and me. They have LS babies and they have done tons, and tons of research on the BEST approaches and just have a wealth of knowledge and experience. You honestly can't go wrong! One thing you truly have to understand is that a diet made up of high meat and organ protein is extremely difficult on the liver for a LS baby. |

| His last bile test was in Aug. His original vets at Oklahoma State Univ. pulled him off the L/D diet after 3 weeks of post op. He has been on a normal diet since. My vet said we would re-check at our next visit..Which is next month. And I definately know that a diet of hamburgers is not healthy. I'm normally really good at figuring out what is wrong with my fur kids...But he has me baffled. |

WOW - normal diet after 3 weeks Can you get the Natural Balance Vegitarian Blend - this would be appropriate for him? Small fresh apple pieces (no skin) are good. Romain Lettuce is good? You can give him a little of low sodium cottage cheese or low sodium nonfat plain yorgut. You want to lean more towards a veggie diet. He needs low but quality protein (cottage cheese and egg fits this category). But with homemade you need it balanced with Vits and supplements which is hard....so I would try the Natural Balance Veg. Dry Kibble and maybe a little Hills l/d canned | |

| AST 27 Alkaline Phosphatase 67 Protieins 5.7 Phosphorus 4.8 Amylase 489 CPK 118 Osmolality 295 WBC 8.7 Nuetrophils 5046 Lyphocytes 2958 Monocytes 435 Eosinophils 261 I hope thats all the right things, I compared very 1st BAT with Newest and gave the ones that stated high on the original...I have been researching the Natural Balance Veggie diet, and thier Duck & Potato Canned and Fish & Sweet Potato Canned formulas. He's been on the Science Diet Nature's Best, and my big dog eats Diamond Lamb and Rice, I figured he would attempt to try her's but he's made no attempt at all toward Dog food. |

| BAT = Bile Acid Test There are 2 numbers. A pre number and a post number. This is a blood draw. The dog is usually fasted for 12 hours. Blood is drawn, then they are fed a very high protein food. And they must stay for 2 hours, then blood is drawn again. The range is as follows: Pre meal bile number should be less than 10 Post meal bile number should be less than 20 The BAT will show how the liver is functioning. If his Post # is above 20 - there is still an issue going on with his liver function ******* MEAT is too high in ammonia for the liver to process and it becomes a toxic build up in his system. This is doing more harm than good for LS babies Honestly, I would try the Vegetarian Formula from Natural Balance. You can add a little low sodium cottage cheese or goat cheese to entice him to eat (if he won't eat it plain) - You could also soak it in water too. |
