| Bella Getting Spayed Bella is going to get spayed on Thursday November 20th and I don't want her to go. I am so sad and scared. She has not spent a night away since we got her in Dec of last year. I am just so afraid that something will happen to her. I know people on here mentioned a specific anesthesia that is better for them. She weighs 5.5 lbs. She is a little skittish and gets shakey when she is scared. The vet said depending on the time of surgery and how she does depends on her spending the night or coming home. I think she would be better off home since we will be with her. I dread her spending the night alone in a cage in the vets office. I have put it off too long already. Hate this. |

| Isoflurane or possibly sevoflurane should be used as maintenance anesthesia. She may need something else before so they can hook up the iso or sevo. She should have an IV and surgery should be done on a heated surface. Preop blood work should be done also. If there is nobody there with her, she should absolutely not stay alone after surgery. She will still be coming out of anesthesia and what if something goes wrong? What if she reacts to the pain meds? There are other things that can go wrong also. It is okay to let the vet watch them the first night but if nobody is there, I would not leave her. Ellie's old vet office is open 24/7 with a vet there at all times. Ellie didn't get out of her spay and liver biopsy surgery til about 3PM and we brought her home after 7 (could've had her at 6). She did just fine being at home but I did stay up all night with her (my decision...).

| Unless there's somebody at the vet's office, I would insist on you taking her home...that way, if any complications arise, you'd be there to attend to her and take her to the emergency vet or notify your vet. I have taken both of my babies home after their spay...and they were much better off because they were less stressed. The vet for my first baby didn't do overnight care, so I told them unless she got to go home with me...we weren't going to do it. So they let me be the exception and I took my baby home. My second one, since I moved---she has 24 hour service...so i was okay with her staying there, except she has separation anxiety. My baby was fine to go home---she was alert and everything... so... it was a good thing. Good luck with the surgery and talk to your vet about your concerns... I was crying when I had mine done---but it was for the best.

| First of all, take a deep breath and don't stress yourself out too much! I'd have to say "ditto" to what everyone else has said. Make sure your little one is getting the required care before, during, and after. Make sure to ask questions and make sure to ask the right questions. If you want to you can search through the forums and there are a lot of great threads that cover just what things you need to worry about. Zoë got spayed a week ago yesterday. I was sooooooooo nervous. She went to the vet at 8am and was out of surgery by 10am. Our vet is a 24/7 emergency vet, so there would have been someone there but she came home at 4pm. Her stitches were internal so we don't have to do a follow up. The day we picked her up she was a bit out of it. She was 80% normal the next day (though she really needed her pain meds that day), and by the next day she was completely herself. Now she's totally back to normal, besides having a few scabs left. It was a bigger challenge getting her to stay still and calm (to not hurt herself) than her recovering! She was trying to run around and climb the stairs and just didn't understand why we were stopping her. All she wanted to do was play. You're the expert on your Bella. Just keep an eye on her and as long as you're keeping her best interests in heart you'll be doing the right thing! -Vicky and Zoë |

| My Katy was just spayed yesterday and she did very well. I worried about it for no reason. Today she is doing very well - she has eaten and is still a little quieter than usual. (for which I am thankful). The hardest part will be to keep them calmed down for a few days. I too think it is much better to bring them home the same day - much less stressful for them. It would be a necessity if there is noone at the vet's with them at night. I hope all goes as well for you and your baby. |

As a previous vet tech your baby will be perfectly alright. My vet does not keep dogs over night for spaying, but i'm sure someone will be there with her.

| Good luck to Bella, I'm sure she will do great. I would try to bring her home, I'm sure she would appreciate spending that time with you, and it will make you feel better. I understand about being nervous, my sophie just turned 5 months, so in another month I will be doing the same thing. I'm just hoping we can get her to 4 pounds my then, your Bella is a good weight for the surgery too. I'm sure she will do great. |
