| What to do with my new baby I am getting my new puppy next week and I have all her supplies and am ready to spoil her!! My question is that, I am getting her on the 21st and will be with her that day, Saturday and Sunday. I have to go to work Monday through Wednesday and then I have off Thanksgiving Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I work just a few blocks away from my home. So, what do I do with my new baby when I am not home? I do have a playpen and I do have a crate, but I am not sure what to keep her in. I can come home 1x during the day for an hour. The breeder said I should leave out water and food for her, so she can eat when she is hungry, so wouldnt that make her have to go to the bathroom often? So, wouldnt she pee/poop in her crate if I left her there for all that time? Should I leave her in the playpen with her food water, wee wee pads and toys during the day? At night, should she stay in the playpen or shall I crate her? I am not sure where to put her while I am not home and where to put her at night during her bedtime. Any help would be appreciated!! |

| i HIGHLY Suggest crating at night- the first 2-3 nights will be hard but Layla is no 2.5 and she LOVES her crate- is actually in it now napping. She will probably cry- and will have to get up a few times during the night to pee but i think the few months of getting up at night is worth her loving her crate. During the day i'd put her crate inside the play pen so she has access to it with her food/water pee pad and a few safe toys- i'd also leave the tv on for her. try and exercise her in the morning and when you come home at lunch so she will just sleep when you are gone. congrats on the new baby! |

| I'm not help here much since I don't work, but when my girls where little I use the crate at night and in the day a playpen untill they were potty train then they had the house for themselve, I think Marcerella02 give you a good advice I will just make sure she eat before you go to work just in case you don't want it to have a hypoglicemic attack or somenthing. Congratulations on your new baby I'm so happy for you

| I agree with Marci- I would definately crate during the night -but PLEASE don't leave the crate out in another room!! Can you put it on a nightstand by your bed? I did that with Ranger and it worked perfectly, he slept through the night from day 1. When I got him as a puppy I had already cleared it with my boss to bring him in with me for the first week or so, which I was totally thankful for! Of course I have my own office so it was no trouble for anyone. Plus, it's great socialization because no one can leave a puppy alone!!

| Canyon slept in his crate on my bed from day one and has slept through the entire night so I highly suggest that you put your baby in a small crate (big enough to turn around, lay down, stand) on your bed or on your nightstand next to you, where they can see you. While you are gone, a large crate that would contain potty pads, food/water, toys, would be great or even better an x-pen or playpen so the baby has more room with all of the above items. Congrats on the new baby!!! |

| Thank you!! Now, if I put her in her crate at night on my nightstand, what happens when she has to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night?? Will she pee in the crate? How will I know when to take her out? When I take her out, where do I put her to pee? Keep a pad on the floor by the nightstand? |

I would just take her to where you want her to potty during the day, and put her down on the pad. Make sure you carry her to the spot Also, make sure your crate is little so it's just a sleeping den. I have a sleeping crate (tiny, soft-sided crate) and a daytime crate (larger and plastic). I am so excited for you!

you kind of need to decide if you are going to pad train her or not, if you don't want her to go inside the house at all, then you probably shouldn't pad train her, you should just take her out whenever she needs to go to the bathroom.

| Hopefully the baby won't go potty in it's crate - they truly don't want to do that. Make sure they've gone potty before putting them in. You should be able to tell if it's a cry because they are in a crate and everything is so new and they are scared, or crying because they truly have to go potty and need to get out so they don't soil their crate. For the first week, I kept a potty pad on the floor by my bed just in case Canyon woke me up urgently, I could just put him on the pad, watch him till he went and then straight back in the crate. I got lucky, he has slept through the night from the beginning. I am picking up Canyon's new brother tomorrow so I will be going through the same scenario as I did with Canyon when I first brought him home. Hope I get lucky a 2nd time on the sleeping through the night without having to go potty. |

| Thank you all!! I live in an apartment in NYC and while its big enough for her to play in and maybe even get lost, there is no way I will be able to get her out of the door, down the hall, in the elevator, down to the lobby, through the lobby and then outside in time. So, I will have to potty train her on a pad. I already bought 300 pads and hope that it does not stink up the apartment when she goes! |

YT 3000 Club Member | I would do the playpen when you are at work and crate at night, put something with her in the playpen that smells like you since you are her new momma. It is good to leave food out when you are gone because they need to eat several times a day. Yorkies can get low blood sugar some more than others if they are a smaller puppy. |

| All great advice here. Xpen with small nightime kennel or cage with food, water, wee pad, toys in the daytime when not at home. Put the small nightime kennel in your room at night. Only one more thing I found useful was to cover the nightime kennel so they cannot see you. It worked well with both my girls. It calmed them right down. I also use a cue work or phrase when I put them to bed. I say "time to go beddy" when I put them in it. Make sure they go potty before you put them to bed so if they cry at first you will know they don't need to go. Congratulations on your new baby. They are such fun. |
