| Traveling with the babies In two weeks, I will be traveling by plane with both of my babies. I have traveled with Monkey when he was a puppy and he seemed to be fine. I have never traveled with two dogs before. I remember using pee pads to let him pee in the restroom b/c he was a puppy and I knew he would have to go from time to time. Now they're both grown and I don't know what the "rules" are. I know they should stay hydrated when traveling, but that means they will have to pee. A friend of mine said that when he travels with his dog, he doesn't let it eat or drink anything 6 hours before take off and does not allow it to until the entire trip is complete. That just sounds horrible to me. Any tips

| Take a container that is about the same size of what ever water dish you will be traveling with and make a ice cube for that size of dish. This way the dog can lick on the ice to keep hydrated, but not over drink so they wouldn't have to go potty as much. We on occasion have to fast our dogs for surgerys and blood test, ect.. so it would hurt them for a few hours to go without food. But I am with you I think my babies should have everything all the time. Another tip for inside the kennels or cretes is the product you line your cuboards with, not contact paper, but the other stuff that isn't sticky but I get mad everytime I use it because it is clingy. It is of rubbery consistancy, well anyways that works great as a non skid product in the bottom. It adherse to the plastic in the cage and allows your dogs not to slip around. I used to use old towels to line my kennels to go the vets ect... Now I put that in the bottom of their kennels with their favorite blanket and it work so nice... Hope this helps

| Thanks! Great tips. I really like the lining idea. That will definitely make them a little more cozy to have some traction in there. Sounds like you travel with yours plenty. So, it's true about not feeding them :-( Oh well, you're right, we do have to starve them a little for other things. They may get sick on the flight as well. How long before your trips do you stop feeding yours? Do you feed them just very light meals the day before and not on the travel day at all?

| I usually dont let mine eat 4 hours before the flight. I also dont let them drink 2 hours before the flight and I make sure they do thier business before we get on the plane. I also make sure that I try and tire them out as well as I can before we get to the gates so that they will sleep most of the flight. |

| Thanks! I feel so much better now! The babies appreciate it even though they don't know it. Mommy know what she's doing now

| All my traveling has been road trips ( in the car) with my babies. (Hoping to travel to Germany with a couple for shows next year ) If I go they go.... I usually don't feed four hours before we are leaving., and that is the ones that get car sick...but I do give them a little nutra-cal just to make sure their sugar levels don't get low. This is about the only time I ever have to use it. But the ice and liners are miracles.

| When I fly with my chi's I asked the flight attendants for ice so they have something to lick during take off and landing. But I like the idea of freezing a bowl of water. I also hold them, while in their carrier, in my lap when we take off and land. I think that if they are in my lap and not on the floor the impact of landing and take off isn't so harsh. I just wait to hear 'flight attendants be seated' and then I pick them up. I also bring soft, chewy treats and hold/mush them between my fingers and put my hand in the carrier during take off & landing. I let the pups scrape the treat out between my fingers, this helps them keep swallowing so they can clear their ears. They won't want the ice the whole time, but the treats they'll want. I have been allowed to take them out during flight and let them sleep under my blanket. But that was in 1st class. Back in coach, it was like the soup nazi was back there! But I kept the crate in my lap the whole time. I bring potty pads with me. I have learned to bring a pad that has been used already makes potty'ing much easer. I know its gross, but when it has 'inspiration' already on it, they tend to go quicker. And with all the hustle & bustle of the airport, the scent helps the dog know where to go. If it is a fresh one, it seemed harder for them to go. But one already used, it seemed to trigerr or as I call it 'inspire' them to go faster. Try to get them to go on one before your trip. Keep it in a ziploc if need be. But it really does help. Especially if they don't use them all that much anymore. And if it gets too used, press it against a new one, so you can pass on the inspiration and not have to carry one that is beyond use. I hope these tips helped!!
