| How to pick the right Yorkie? I've been looking around here and there at getting a Yorkie. When I look in the local classifieds, they can range anywhere from around $500 up to $1500 or more. How do I know I'm getting a good, healthy and adorable Yorkie? I've seen some Yorkies come home really cute and then within a year are not so cute anymore (OK, I know, I'm being very vein). I'm not convinced that $1500 buys me a better Yorkie than $500 but the consumer in me says buy the more expensive one, it'll be better. I think I know what people are going to say, look at the parents and that's the best predictor of what your dog will be like through the years. Anythings else I should be looking for when I visit all these puppies? Also, I'm inclined to go female on the gender. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I would start by researching and finding a reputable breeder, there are many on here and many show breeders, who breed to the standard are out there. I have had yorkies since 1970 and my first was a 16 lb floppy eared short coated love bug. But since I really wanted one that met the yorkie standard I did more research with each one I got after that. My Pixe and Roxie are from a show breeder and have the look I was wanting. I got Pixie when she was 13 months so I knew exactly what I was getting. A reputable breeder should show you the parents, keep the puppies until they are 12 weeks old and be able to tell you approximately how much they will weigh, no one can say for sure, but a breeder has a good idea what her lines do. Just don't rush into it and fall for the first cute puppy you see. I am sure you will get a lot of help on here. Good luck!

| Hi, welcome to YT! Well healthy comes first, you should be able to take the furbaby to have a vet check. Look at the parents, that will give you an idea of what he/she will look like a few years from now. It took me years to find Princess. I looked at lots of puppies, read all their papers on them. But when I found Princess it was her eyes that made me know she was the one.

| I definitely agree that the most important thing is finding a good breeder. We found a great one who let us come visit and hang out with her dogs for a while. We got to see another dog who was about a year old with the same parents as our little girl, which gave us an idea what she might look like when she's grown. As far as price, if you find a breeder you trust, then you can have more confidence that you're not getting ripped off. We paid quite a bit for Ella, but she was completely worth it.

| So how does one find a good breeder in my area (Utah, Salt Lake City)? Also, I'd like to put a deposit on a pup and take delivery later. We're hoping to get a Yorkie around Easter time frame. My thinking is I'll get "the pick of the litter" that way. I'm always a little nervous when I see someone selling the last of the litter thinking that a host of people passed on this dog (for whatever reason). |

My Turky was a "leftover"(he had 2 sisters). I didn't think much of it, but like the breeder told us..there always has to be a last to go. Doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad thing. He is full of personality. Also, the groomer and vet both told me that I got an exceptional pup. Best of luck on your search! | |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I think if you find the right breeder, it's easy to find the right yorkie. All puppies are cute, and some people think all dogs are cute, but I really think some dogs aren't that pleasant to look at. If you like the looks of a yorkie, find a breeder who breeds to standard, not someone who has a couple of dogs, and decided to hook them up. Breeding is a science as well as an art, and a good breeder must understand genetics in order to produce healthy beautiful dogs. They study pedigrees and don't just put just any two dogs together. I always recommend the YTCA to find a breeder, the YTCA is the mother club of the AKC, and sets the standard for the Yorkshire terrier. Show breeder's dogs are very affordable because they are actually trying to improve the breed, but they do set strict requirements on whose homes these dogs will go. The saying, "you get what you pay for is true to an extent. It's really hard to find a quality yorkie really cheap, but there are also many Websites that sell Yorkies, for way more than a show breeder would, and puppy millers run them. So price should not dictate the decision. I personally would rather save up, and buy from a reputable breeder because heath problems can be fanatically and emotionally draining. Good luck with your search. You'll find the YTCA link in my signature.

| Thanks for the advice. I agree with you that I'll buy from a breeder who breeds to standard, etc. I checked your YTCA link and there are no breeders in Utah. |

Well that sucks! Perhaps you could contact someone in a nearby state, who may knows of someone in your state. Make sure you really study up on a list of question to ask the breeder. This link has some possible question to ask, read post 6. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...ml#post1900263

| I think you will be able to find a yorkie here on YT. I think a lot of us didn't know where to look before coming to this site and I know personally I found it so frustrating because everytime I called places they were already spoken for. I personally wouldn't have a problem buying one from out of state specially if you can talk to the breeder and tell them what you are looking for because if they are a good breeder they will know the personality of the dog and know which one will be the right one for you. When I got my Standard Poodle I bought her from a breeder in Colorado and she asked me what I was looking for. I told her a non-dominate female and she told me she knew the exact one who lets all the other dogs eat first and then she eats. It was a great experience. As far as the pricing. I definitely think you get what you pay for. I know there are some people on her who said they got their yorkies for $500 or something like that but I think a good breeder has to invest a lot of time and money into the dogs and will have to charge $1,000 minimum. Good luck with you search! Hopefully you will have a new little one soon.

| Check on the YT site for their breeder list. Thats what we did. Healthy is more important than looks. You want a breeder that is concerned with the health of her dogs and does not just breed for profit. Take your time.... the commitment is through good health and bad. Best of luck! |
