| Nighttime behaviors Ok, Lestate has been with us for over 2 weeks now, His nighttime behavior has been ok, I was putting him to bed at 10 or 11 pm and he would not whine or bark and would wake up when our alarm went off at 6:30 am, and he would very rarely go in his crate at night, he was also consistently going on his wee wee pad, now in the last few days i began to take him outside every two hours and so far so good he has been going outside even though he still has accidents inside. But then his nighttime behavior has changed the last couple of nights. He begins to bark at 4:30 which i can understand since i know he should only be able to hold it for about 5 to 6 hours. And then i put him back in his crate and i go back to bed and then at 5:30, 6:30, 7:30 almost on every hour he barks to be let out again, Now my question is does he really need to go or is he just barking for attention? When he starts barking after i know he already went should i just ignore him and leave him in his crate? or is there something else i should do? also i have been taking him out every two hours and i attached a bell to the door that i use religiously, sometimes though i wonder if he even notices it. all of a sudden he also seems to dislike the wee wee pad, i have been following a traning method that i was told worked, when i know he has to go i have been therthering him to his leash which is in reach of the wee wee pad and wait about 10 minutes for him to go and then i release him, i was told to never let him have the run of the house because he is so young. I would really appreciate some advice on these issues. Thanks

| Cut off his water intake about an hour before you go to bed and take him outside right before you go to bed. Tell him a command, I use Hurry Up..Then I think he may want to sleep with you. Yorkies are VERRY social and love to please. He sound like he doesnt want to be left alone. My three Yorkies sleep with us and as soon as I turn of the light One goes under the covers, the others are under my chin and stomach...They love to snuggle...Good Luck.... |

| My little one use to do the same thing when he was younger. As soon as i let him start sleeping with me. He never got up at night...and when he did...he'd get himself off the bed...run to the wee wee pad...then wait for me to pick him back up so he could cuddle back up with me and go back to sleep.

| well sleeping with us could be a good idea, but how can i be sure he won't eliminate on the bed or roll of it while he sleeps, and is sleeping with us really the only solution in your experience?

| I say 'stick with it'! It has only been two weeks. I don't know what your lifestyle is like, but for me I may travel from time to time and either take Strawberry with me or leave her with my parents. In both cases she would need to spend time in her kennel and I want her to be used to it as a safe, fun place. If you never plan to put Lestate in a kennel after her is potty trained then perhaps letting him sleep in bed with you is a good idea. I sure would love for my Strawberry to sleep with me! I give her plenty of cuddle time before bed and in the morning...plus she isn't left alone all day (she comes to work with me) so the kennel at night doesn't seem too much to ask of her! Haha! Everyone needs a bit of alone time. I have had my Strawberry for almost 2 months and she hated her kennel at first, then a few days in she was so good and sleep for nice long periods and only woke me to go outside. Then about a month in she started making a fuss when I put her to bed at night and would cry to be let out every hour. I thought she had to go, but the little poop had just realized that when she cried I took her outside. So she was crying wolf! Or Yorkie! Hahaha! Um...but I stuck with it and put her in and I knew she could hold it for 6 hours for sure so I would ignore any crying she did inbetween and now she is a gem again. She still would prefer to sleep with me, but I let her fall asleep with me and then right when I am going to go to bed, I put her in her kennel and partially cover it with a blanket so it is nice and dark for her and she settles right in. She is going from 11-6 or 6:30 everynight and if I am lucky like today she slept till 7:30 before waking me up. I let her out in the morning to do her business and then she runs back up into my bed and we go back to sleep for an hour or so when time permits! She is a good girl and let's Momma sleep! Haha!

I will also go ahead and cut off his water right before i put him to bed, he has had a water bottle attached to his crate up to this point but i think i'm going to remove it and replace it with a water bowl. Quote:

| What I do is take away her big water dish after 6pm. If she asks for some I will give a little taste, but not leave a huge bowl out, cause she guzzles it. Then at night I put it in her crate with her...but I think she has learnt that she has to be in there for a long time and she cuts herself off. It sounds like you should just stick with the kenneling. I am sure with time and persistance Lestate will learn to enjoy his quiet time too. For me...it was a hard few weeks when she was being so stubborn but it paid off. I just told her to be quiet and she eventually got the idea that I was boss. Now she does well and I am sleeping better too. Strawb has never soiled any of my furniture or my bed. For me what worked well for housetraining was letting her have freedom in return for not doing business in my bedroom. She had a big pen in my room(the room I spend the most time in at home) that I put her in when she was 3 months old to contain her, but she hated being apart from me so when she had an accident she spent more time in there because I couldn't trust her...when she had only gone outside I let her have freedom. It didn't take her long to figure out that momma doesn't like accidents and that she could have freedom if she asked to go out. She is almost 5 months old and she hasn't had an accident at home in 3 weeks and at work she hasn't had one in 2 weeks(and it was my fault for not letting her out when she asked)! The pen has been removed and it makes both our lives much more pleasant. I hated listening to her beg to be let out. I wish you good luck. I am sure you will find that Lestate will get better and better. It seemed like Strawb wasn't learning, and then BAM! She got it! Same with the kennel thing! She was a pain in the butt for a week or so and then I guess the message got to her and she got it! Fingers crossed!

| You named him "Lestat" and wonder why he wants up all night ?? I crated my pups until they were about a year old; at that time, I felt they were big enough to sleep with us without getting squished. They have stairs so they can get up and down at their whim ... In addition to going outside, they have piddle pads inside for those times when we're not available to let them out. "Not available" includes the middle of the night . Maybe that would work for your pup, too? |

| Is he emptying completely when you take him out? Does he pee when you take him out again? Puppies need to go two or three times to fully empty their bladder. All it took was one accident and I learned my girls cries for potty all too quickly.

| That was my husband's idea for the name we already have a cat named Marius as well. And last night went pretty well, he woke me up once at 4:30 and i took him outside where he eliminated out of both ends, I put him back in his crate and covered it in a blanket he quickly went to sleep and i did not hear a peep from him until i got up in the morning. It was so nice to be able to sleep.

My grandson's pup (a Westie) sleeps better with his crate covered, too. He's in the traditional wire crate, so it makes sense. When the Yorks were crated, they were in travel crates, so it was pretty dark anyway. Nice to hear you got some sleep. Puppies and human babies have a lot in common when it comes to keeping you awake at night | |

| Just a thought...but could the time change be an issue? It would throw off Sadie Mae sometimes, she had a very exact internal time clock. Just a thought.
