| I'm a terrible mother! Need advice I have had my baby Lila since she was 8 weeks old. I never had ANY intention on breeding her and always planned on getting her spayed. Well time (and I guess a loss of finances) got away from me and she began her heat cycle 2 days ago. She's 8 1/2 months. I am livid with myself. I have read all about the possibilities of cancer if females aren't spayed when they are young and I am distraught knowing I may have put her at risk due to my procrastination. I just always assumed I had a little bit more time. She's been spotting blood of course, and her vulva is swollen (which she licks constantly) but she seems to be acting normal otherwise. The only time we come in contact with male dogs is when we were are out on walks and she's on a leash so I'm not worried about her getting pregnant. But is there anything else I can do to keep her comfortable during this time? When will I know her cycle is over? And how soon after than can I have her spayed? I'm soooo disappointed with myself. | It can be thought of as one week coming in, one wek in and one week going out, so close to three weeks. I would wait 4-6 weeks after she is done to get her spayed because it is safer. It is true that if you spay before the first heat she would've had almost a 0% chance of mammary cancer but spaying after the second heat still significantly reduces her risk. There are some people who won't spay til after 1 year old because animals can look "leggy" if they are altered early and there are health issues that can come with altering too early, especially in larger dogs.

| You are no a bad mother---you were a worried mother. And if it makes you feel better---i didn't get either of my poodles spayed until after their second heat (scared!) Just get some nice soft cushions so she can relax, keep her warm, and do whatever she says BTW, my doctor said to give it at least 30 days, preferably 2 mos before spaying, after the heat. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Don't beat yourself up. Roxie, Cali and Maya all came into heat before I could get them spayed. It happens. Maya is going to be 12 years old and so far no problems related to her having a heat cycle.

| Aww, don't beat yourself up, you aren't a bad Mama. I've been lucky so far *knock on wood* Abby will be 9.5 months old next Tuesday and is being spayed that day. I've been worried about her going into heat too. Your baby will be OK. Crystal I'd never heard that before, that it could make them leggy...reallY? Interesting, I learn something new everyday.

| Don't beat yourself up over it! You're in no way a bad mother! The same thing happened to me w/ my Bella, I planned to get her spayed after the holidays last year, and right away in January she started. They grow up so fast, the time flies, and you don't realize it until something like that happens. You think "Oh she's still a puppy" then you wake up one morning and she's a little lady!

| Hi and welcome to yt!!!!! YOUR not a BAD MOM!!! Time has a way of getting away from all of us at times....My friend was planning on spaying her little girl when she was around 8 months old....well her baby went into heat at 7 months!!! | Their legs look too big for their body...just badly proportioned. I'm not sure I've ever heart about it in a small dog though.

| Thank You! Thanks to all for your kind words and for making me feel better. After I didn't get any immediate responses back, I thought my thread my sunk and never thought to check for your replies. So far she's still doing ok. I bought some diapers for her but she won't let me put them on her. She's a wiggler and very strong! So I just laid old towels down where she likes to play and romp and I try to wipe her down with pet wipes every so often. I usually bathe her in the sink but I decided to let her "soak" and gave her a real bath in the bathtub. It hasn't quite been a week yet so I guess we have 2 more weeks of this. But she actually seems calmer now so it's not quite so bad. And as soon as her vet says she is ready she will be getting spayed! Wish us both luck! Thanks again everyone! |
