| New Yorkie Owner Hello! I have been lurking, but decided to go ahead and jump in here. We just got our first Yorkie this past weekend. He is 8 weeks old. We are still adjusting. His name is Maximus. Dh was not fond of animals in the house, but he absolutely adores the pup, and he also named him. He is hooked, lined, and sinkered. lol I would love any book recommendations on handling and care of them. We are doing the crate training, although, last night and Tuesday he peed in the crate (we even have the crate blocked just big enough for him to turn around in. Last night was my fault, I overslept. I have been getting up every two and three hours to take him outside. I know he is still a puppy and he will have accidents though, so I just keep on trying. He whines a little when he first goes in his crate, but usually quiets down in no time. This is our baby: |

| Welcome to YT!!! And congrats on your new little boy - he's adorable! Someone can probably recommend something else, but I read 'A New Owner's Guide to Yorkshire Terriers' by Janet Jackson and 'Yorkshire Terrier' by Robert Killick....though to be honest I found doing searches on YT more helpful in answering my questions All the best with little Maximus! xxx xxx

| Welcome to YT and congrats on your new little one! 8 weeks is very young for a new Yorkie pup to be in his new forever home. Most reputable breeders agree that the proper age of placement is 12 weeks. Because of that, I would strongly suggest that you monitor him closely during his first few weeks there and make sure that he is eating several times a day. Also, make sure he is getting enough rest. Familiarize yourself with the warning signs of hypoglaucemia and make sure you have Nutrical on hand. It is very easy for these little ones--especially at such a young age--to have issues with this and it can hit them VERY quickly. Crate training, like any training, takes time...months even. Just be patient and persistant and he'll get the hang of it soon. He's a little pup so it will be hard on him for a while...which will make it hard on you too. Hang in there! |
