Luxating Patella surgery this afternoon - YorkieTalk.com Forums

Our sweet little CoCo

had surgery this afternoon on her left hind leg for luxating patella. Dr Patterson decided not to correct her right leg after 2 hours in surgery and CoCo's heart rate dropping.

I am relieved that she only had one leg done as I believe this will help her to recover sooner. I am thinking about 6 months down the road to have the other one done so she is fully recovered from her first.

I also suggested that we start using Chrondroitin Glucoseamine to help her out. Dr Patterson said that would be a good idea and to keep her on it the rest of her life.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Sure does pull at our heartstrings to have her go through this but it was much needed. She started showing signs a few years ago when we moved to CA and had alot of stairs after being in Belgium (where we got her) and lived in one story. Then it got really bad when we moved to Seattle and have alot of wooden floors she is constantly slipping on. Even with the little rubber caps on her toenails.

We get to bring her home tomorrow and I want to make sure to do everything right for her. I even looked at a small baby crib for her! We have a kennel out and ready if needed, it stays packed away. Even though her feet may not touch the floor for awhile! Well, outside of going potty, when she can.

We have 5 furry beds for her and I do have a heating pad (shuts off automatically) as well. Bought a rubber backed bath rug for her to lay on too thinking it might help the first few days if she has an accident it won't soak through.

All her meds will be in liquid form as well. It is hard to believe that they give these little one morphine.

Hoping to hear from from other lovers and gather some info.

Sending hugs your way. Gracie had both of her knees done at the same time about a year ago. It still tugs at my heart to look at the pics of her. If you can find a super soft bed pillow, baby will probably like to be on that for several days. It makes it much more comfortable to carry the little one around on a pillow. Take care and let me know if you have any questions. Lots of treats, loves and warm fuzzies are just what the doctor ordered!

You are so right! Pillow is a great idea!! Have lots of those and they are feather and down so it will feel sooo good!

I cannot imagine have both little legs done at the same time. I was so upset and frightened by the pain she would be in and not being able to get around at all. If you were in front of me right now, I would give you such a big hug!

I do appreciate the pillow suggestion very much!!

Aww, I hope your baby recovers quickly. I would do a search on YT for luxating patella so you can check out the many pictures posted from other yories lp surgeries, a lot of great advice in those threads.

Hi everyone!

CoCo is home and doing well. Dr only corrected one leg due to being in surgery for 2 hours and CoCo's heartrate slowing down. Honestly, I am relieved that he only did one. I think she will recover quicker on three legs. She has to have her other back leg done in about 6 months. Slowly eating and drinking. She does potty outside for us.

She loves the heating blanket and of course, we carry and hold her alot!

Thank you so much for everyone's kindness and responses. We really needed it!

We look forward to CoCo being whole again in the next several weeks and months.

Welcome to YT Jeanette! Glad to hear CoCo is home, I'm sure she is happy about that! LP is so scarry, but lots of folks on here have been through it. hope that is helpful to you! I always feel better about dealing with these issues when I know I have friends online who have been there, done that! I speak for everyone here when I say we are glad to have another responsible yorkie owner on the site! Keep us posted on how she is doing, and PICTURES PLEASE!

How is CoCo feeling today? I've been through 3 lp surgeries....both knees on my maltese and one on my yorkie. The first week or two is the hardest and then things settle down for the long recovery.
