| Extremely Nervous Hi all, I wanted to ask for your opinion. Perhaps you've had a similar situation and can shed some light. I have a problem with Chelsea and I'm not quite sure what to do about it. I have always said that she is very reserved. She definitely lacks that "fearless terrier" personality that the yorkies have. I accepted that as part of her personality but lately she has become afraid of everything. All sorts of noises scare her, from very loud to the most insignificant sound. Sometimes there's no noise at all. It has become a problem b/c everyday sounds scare her. The blender, the wipers on the car, chewing gum, the computer, etc... I'm really at a loss here. I have no clue what has caused this or what to do about it. I don't encourage her when she is scared. She had an episode on saturday. She heard a siren like sound on the computer and that was enough to ruin the rest of her day. She was so nervous, she wouldn't eat, and was hiding for most of the day. Do you think this could be something health related? I guess she has always been very skittish but this is concerns me. These episodes have increased and there's no logical explanation. Any ideas? |

| hmmm, how long as this gone on? Have you had her ears checked? If not, you might want to give that a try. Maybe her ear hurts, your vet can give you some drops to make her feel better. Maybe someone else has another idea for you. I sure hope so

| I have a yorkie that is nervous too but not that nervous. Nervous to the point of not eating is not good. I would have her vet checked

She was fine yesterday and today but i can't help but wonder why she gets like that all of a sudden? It's so sad to think that something is bothering her and I can't figure out what it is. | |

| I don't know what to tell you to help her, Boo is the same way, any little sudden noise he is out of the room like he was shot from a cannon. However, I've never noticed it putting him off his feed. For the most part I try to be aware that he is that way and when I know I'm going to make a noise I try to get his attention first so that it doesn't startle him. I usually say, "Boo, momma's going to make a big noise now." And that seems to help. If he stays I praise him, but not too big a deal and say something dumb like, "Well that was a big noise, huh Boo." The other thing is if I make a noise without alerting him first and he starts to run out of the room I'll say, "Bye-bye Boo. Come back soon, ok?" When he hears the bye-bye part he thinks that I may be leaving and he doesn't want to risk being left behind and will sometimes come back. I always praise him if he comes back and usually take a second to give him a pet or scratch. I really think he is just very sensitive to loud noises and that perhaps in his first home that loud noises equal bad things happening. We've had him almost 2 years and he is getting better. I'm hoping that in another year or two he'll be even better or possibly even over it.

| it may be helpful to talk to a trainer or post in the training section here. one thing i've read is that comforting or cuddling a scared pup can reinforce that she should fear something, as opposed to ignoring the stimulus yourself to show that it's not something to fear. BUT it's so hard not to want to comfort them...

| How old is she? I am thinking that she has just not ever had the chance of being exposed enough to different sounds , and noises. If she is A pup , then all of these are new to her, or she may have had a frightning experience with sounds . I too believe it can be corrected using behaioral techniques. Some Dogs, however, are naturally shy, or timid with noises, and ear infections do not help matters. I know for example, My Suzi who 8 months old does not like her hair combed, as son as she sees the comb she runs away from me. LIttle stinker, is very smart, and seems to always know when it is time to be combed. LOL.

I understand your concerns and hope your baby can be eased of her fears of loud noises. You have every right to worry, she's your baby.

I spoke to a behaviorist and she said for some reason (i cant remember why) 2 years old is a common age for these things to suddenly come on. i thought that was odd because it was like bam two years old and scared of thunder.

| The best thing you can do is not shield her from noises as well... I like how that one poster said that she says BYBYE to her guy when he gets scared.......lol that's cute...try not to ever coddle her...when she's in a fearful state...because that will just encourage her fearfulness. I would take her and expose her to things that scare her that ...so she can see nothing bad is going to happen to her. The dog whisperer does teach how to deal with fearful animals....you should check him out! I love his techniques....it's helped several of our dogs...bad thing about a fearful dog is that later they can start biting out of fear...so you don't want it to get any worse....

| I'm taking her in for a check up to make sure nothing is wrong with her ears. Today she has been good. I guess I'll have to pay attention to when it is that she gets frightened. |
