| When you go to work where and what do you leave your pup? My husband and I are both currently unemployed and looking for full time work. Because we are not working right now, we are home with Roxy pretty much all day long. If we have had to go somewhere for long periods of time (ie: the mall, relatives place, etc) or if we know she's not tired we will take her with us in her carrier bag - which she loves. Problem is I think we've spolied her, and now she is used to coming with us most places. When we're at home and my husband or I leaves the room Roxy will sit and look at the door and whine. If we both have to go out and we have to leave her we will put her in her little crate and hope for the best. My husband left once and I pretended to leave with him, but I was really just sleeping in out bedroom. Roxy barked and cried for about 5 mins and then stopped. She was fine for the rest of the hour and a bit while my husband was out. This morning we tried the same thing and she wouldn't stop barking for over half an hour, and because we live in a Condo and don't want to get kicked out I had to come in and stop her from crying. My main question is how do we get her used to us leaving her home alone, especially for longer periods of time. Once we both start working during the day she will be alone pretty much all day, except during the lunch hour when my husband is planning on coming home and walking/playing with her. Also, what should I leave her in during longer periods of time when we're away? Right now she's in her crate when we're not home or at night, but I've had others express that I should not be leaving her in her crate all day long too, which I understand, but I just don't want to move her to a bigger pen during the day and have her not feel safe, and therefore bark even more. Help what should we do? I really love my little girl and want to do the right things for her. I also want to make sure we don't get kicked out of our condo if she barks too much while we're away! What did you all do when you had to leave your young puppies all day long. I don't think that we should have to limit our life style so much that we are restricted to only going out an hour or to at the most.... |

| Why not put her in an X-pen when you're not home? that way she'll have more room to play around. You could probably start by doing it now a couple times a day while you're home to get her use to it.

| From what I've seen in "It's me or the Dog" a show on Animal Planet when dog owners have the same problem the trainer has the owner come in and out the house many times for a few seconds over and over again. Like that the dog knows and gets used to it so when you do go out he'll also know you will return. It always works on the show. |

Donating YT Addict | I'm lucky with my job because it's right next to my house. So i can go at lunchtime and let Tyke out and take him for a walk. Right now he has a bedroom to himself. We have his food, water and pee pad in there with his toys. There is a baby gate in the doorway, so if we come in and out he can see us and we talk to him and tell him we'll be back in a little while. It's also all tile floor, so easy clean up. He only goes in the carrier at night when it's bedtime. this seems to work for us. If you can't give him a room, then i would suggest the xpen also. it gives them more space and not the feeling of so confined. hope this helps

| Thanks very much, please keep the advise/comments coming. We live in a 3 room flat in south london that is very very close to the road and walkways. Our bedroom windows face the parking lot, and to be honest our entire condo/flat is not very sound proof at all - I don't know what is with Brits and not having very thick windows! Anyways, since Roxy grew up with these sounds constantly around her they don't bug her, but I'm, just so worried that her barking will be heard outside. That being said she can't have a whole room to her self yet, as she can't be trusted - she's so snoopy when she's bored she loves to get into things! I guess we will probably have to get her a bigger pen, the only problem is it will take up a lot of space in our tiny place. What do you think about leaving her crate inside the pen? |

Also, I had also seen the "It's Me Or The Dog" episode where they go in and out and in and out to get the dog used to them leaving. That particular dog had separation anxiety, which is what it seems like yours has too. Bella had TERRRIBLE separation anxiety when we got her (she had been spoiled by the breeder's daughter!), so we did that to get her used to us leaving. I live in a duplex and she would howl and howl and cry and then pee all over herself because she was so worked up jumping around. The combination of doing that, leaving treats, and leaving the tv on helped with her. I really think doing the training is a must for you.....I can explain exactly how to do it if you think you might want to give it a try--just PM me. It's kind of time consuming and gets really old really quickly, but it is SOOO worth it!! Last edited by bellasmomok; 10-22-2008 at 10:41 AM. | |

| Lots of good advice given so far. My only contribution is to start now with the coming and going, do short periods at first then lengthen them. Also, I would contact my neighbors and let them know that you are working on getting her use to ya'll leaving and that there may be some noise right now, but that you are doing your best to keep it at a minimum and during day time hours to reduce the annoyance of it. Being proactive with your neighbors always help to avoid anger issues. Good luck!!

| Fiona is in her crate for about 6 hrs while i'm at work. I leave at 730am, and get in at about 445pm- my boyfriend is home by 2pm, so he takes her out. I have lots of fleece blankets for her, and her toys- none which she can ingest while i'm not around, so its pretty safe...she doesnt seem to mind it at all. i'll usually give her her kong toy with some food in it.

| Roxy I hear you, my little humphrey is exactly the same. I just wrote all my neighbors a little note, letting them know that Humps is still learning and that I apologise for the inconveniences. Luckily, my neighbors seem to like the little furball and most are working during the day anyway. I suggest you take her for long walks in the morning, and chances are she will be too tired to bark and moan when you're gone. In my case, when I am going to be gone for 3 hours or longer I just crate him (because he is not fully potty trained). But lately, I have been leaving for two hours at a time and just letting him run free in the living room with the tv on... we removed our rugs and everything in case of an accident, but not once has he had an accident and he is usually napping by the time I come back (when crated, he used to pee on the sleeping area, destroy the pee pad...roll over his mess...). |

| I would get the X pen..Pets at home probably do something like this..and start leaving her for short periods now..maybe leave a radio on for her or something. Once your baby get used to a routine stick to it..anything out of the ordinary unsettles them..I have the exact same routine everyday for my dogs ..as I'm getting my coat on for work my Pixie jumps in her crate by herself because she knows i'm going out and she is used the routine..she just sleeps till I get home..i'm out of the house about 5 hours per day.

| I bought from Toys R Us a super xpen. I made a big playpen out of it which gave her plenty of room to sleep, eat, and at the other end her pee pad. When she was about a year old I gave her run of the house with my other two and they all do great. They each have their own bed and their toys so they settle down to sleep until I come home

| All above suggestions are really good. I would only add that you may want to get her a few toys in which you could put treats in it (i.e., such as the Kong or Everlasting Treat Ball). This may keep her busy for a bit. Here are the links. For the Kong, you could get small treats and then put peanut butter or use Kong Stuffn.
