| Is there any hope???? My husband is really getting irritated with Gucci peeing and pooping in the house! He KNOWS to go outside and does his biz on command, so why 10 minutes later does he pee in the house??! He is 3 months old and I know he can hold it for the most part since I have seen him squat and yelled and he stopped until he got outside, so WHY?? Can someone please tell me that you have your little Yorkie luv completely trained!!?? ANYONE! |

| At 3 months old he is only a baby and will have accidents. Peanut was 6 months when he was housebroken. |

| So there is hope! How did you do it with Peanut? I keep hearing that it is impossible to train small dogs, but I always feel nothing is impossible! |

| I would take Peanut out like every hour and you also have to watch him like a hawk when he is inside. At 3 months old he is very young to be house broken, I didn't get Peanut until he was that age. If you catch him in the act just pick him up take him out and tell him potty and maybe a little treat after, never hit or yell at him. Good luck and let your husband know that he is only a baby and it will take time. |

| Oh girl, I can feel the desperation in your post nd I know exactly how you feel! We all do! Honestly, we've all been there and come out the other side. 3 months is veeeeeery young and no pup I've ever known has been close to being housebroken by that age. To expect a puppy of that age to know where to go to the toilet is just not realistic. It's a long old process and can feel so demoralising at times, but stick at it, it will be worth it in the end. Watch Gucci like a hawk, when you see him circling and sniffing around (probably every hour or two at that age) take him outside pronto and then when he does go praise, praise, praise! When he has an accident inside (and he will, a lot) only tell him "NO!" in a strong, stern, deep voice if you catch him at it, never if you didn't see him cos he wont remember doing it and it will only confuse him. The most important thing to remember is that Gucci is a dog and as a dog he will only ever want to please his 'alpha' (you), which means doing living by the house rules, such as doing his business outside. He only does it inside now because he doesn't understand where he's meant to do it, it's not done to annoy you, it's just that he doesn't understand. Hope this helps a little. Dont give up hon, you're doing brilliantly, just keep it up! Jess |

| As everyone has said, he's awfully young to be housebroken! Most puppies don't even come to their forever home until they are 3 months old. Do you use pee pads inside? That might be an option. Mine do both...pee pads inside and we also go out to potty as well. Patience and time

| Mine is about 6 months old and she still has accidents. About 2 a day. Ive done everything youre supposed to. She will not pee at anyone elses house either, just mine. Im not sure why because I have hardwood floors and use the spray every time. Needless to say, she still spends quite a bit of time in her xpen when Im busy around the house because of this. Im still plugging away, hoping for the best.

| Tyler was around 6 months old when he was completely house broken...all though i still have to put a pee mat down at night because sometimes when its cold he pee's through the night! (he is 1 yr old on the 24th!) but he learned fast to go outside it was just accidents up till 6 months when he couldn't hold it and he didn't make it outside in time awwww, I've read in Yorkie books that you shouldn't expect alot from them until their around 6 months especially how little there bladder must be but once they learn they are really good all i did was everytime he went to pee on the floor i said no to stop him and carried him outside everytime and in no time he got what he had to do and from then on he never pees or poops in the house...just a night when its cold he pee's on his mat! so there is hope! you'll do it don't worry it just takes time! good luck. |

| Pasquale was like your puppy. He would go outside...do nothing..then come back in and pee. So i just thought..hey...since he likes going inside..i might as well pee pad train him and i think it was the BEST thing i ever did. Cause now in the mornings when its cold outside and i see the neighbor in her bathrob freezing her butt off and walking her dog outside...i just thank god he pee's on a pad. Now that Pasquale is potty trained, he sometimes pee's when we go outside...which then i praise him and give him a treat. Pee pads are always an option.

There is hope!!!!! Don't you fret! I got Fiona when she was about 3.5 months old. She is now 6 months old and is housebroken to a tee! You need to be consistant with him, he is still so young, and has a SMALL BLADDER!!!!! Yorkies are known to be the worst to housetrain, but you can overcome it! I came up with a command word when taking Fiona out. As soon as they urinate/deficate you say the word. When Fiona would pee I'd say " Good Pee Pee" and really rewarded her when she went. You gotta make sure that EVERYONE in your home is saying the same word, and doing the same thing with him. It is to the point now, when I take Fiona out, I"ll say to her " Go pee pee" and she squats and goes!!!!!! If you are crate training- first thing in the am- take him right out- if your out there for 10-15min and he has done 1 over the other, simply put him back in the crate for another 10 min and try it again. Usually with puppies they are going to have to go after being really active, eating, and sleeping. I would also try pulling food and water at night so he wont go in the crate! GOOD LUCK!!!! It can be done! I promise!

| OH Girl I FEEL YOUR PAIN!!!! RIley is six months old, and he hasnt got it quite down pat yet, we have the pee pads down and if he has to go He will go on them, but when I take the dogs out I say "Come on guys lets go pee" and when I see them go I praise them, ( my neighbors think im mental Im sure) because im out there acting like a nut out there clapping and carrying on..lol But I sounds to me like you are most likely doing what you can, and the problem is your husband!......I go through this with my hubby as well..I just tell him to quit complaining since he is not the one that has to clean anything up!...I also tell him to get over it, the pup is not going to get house broken any faster just to please him, and his complaining is just a waste of time, and if it bothers him that bad when the dog has an accident then he can get off his but onced in awhile and take him out........Oh they get on my nerves...But hang in there your doing your best no matter what hubby says.

| Deegan was a year old by the time he was potty trained. He did great for a while, then out of no where he started doing it in the house again & my bf and I were at our wits end. So back to the basics we went... It wasn't until about he was a year and half old that he had absolutely no more accidents in the house... So be prepared to stick with the program for a while - some learn quicker than others, some are just stubborn, but 3 months really is too young to "know better". That's just when they should be taken away from their mother & littermates and they are probably still trying to figure things out. Good luck - stay strong. You're baby will get it!

| Potty training I didn't notice anybody mentioning a doggy door. We have a doggy door which is wonderful when you have dogs! :-) (Of course you have to have a fenced are for them to go out to from the doggy door.) We got Sara Jane when she was only 5 weeks old. We also had a little maltese/schnauzer mix named Rex. We did have her sleeping in the crate when she was small. We had a potty pad by the doggy door so when she was really little she woke up during the night every 1 1/2 hours to eat and potty. As time went on she slept longer. (Just like a human baby.) By the time she was 3-4 months old she was about 98% potty trained. TRUE. She was going out that doggy door and getting high centered on her belly. (She weighs 3 3/4 pound and is 7 years old now.) Rex pretty much potty trained her when she started going out. She was the easiest puppy we have ever trained. :-) Doggy doors ROCK! Last edited by jackidevaney; 10-15-2008 at 06:20 PM. |

| My boy loves having a target. I fill an empty milk jug and place it in the center of a pad for him and he's more than happy to go nail it! The same thing outside in his "area" provides a visual of what to mark. Terri Shumsky - the guru of the yorkshire terrier has great information on her site for training. Here's a link to some of her stuff: Terri Shumsky Frequently Asked Questions She also has a book on Amazon. Used copies are about $4 or so. To me, it's the "yorkie bible". As for the hubby, I don't think they ever get used to the fur babies! Good luck! |
