| Do you think an owner should change an adult dog's name???? I have had a 5 year old female since the beginning of the year, I really don't care for her name and have toyed with changing it. But on the other hand I feel like her name is who she is and to change it will be like dismissing her!! So I feel torn about changing it. What do you think .... is the name the essence of who she is after 5 years of having it? Should I change it? |

| I think it's OK. When we got Sammy she was 10 months old and we changed her name. It wasn't a big deal. My dogs have so many nicknames. Loki responds to 10+ names and Sammy has at least 3 she recognizes. They figure it out.

| I think if you call your dog ANY name with love in your voice they will answer to it!! I changed Carley's when she was 6 months old...I really disliked her name and I am sure she did as well, it didn't fit her at all.

Senior Yorkie Talker | The big question is does she respond to her current name now or not? If she doesn't change it and just teach her that the new name is her name like you teach a puppy, if she DOES though you still want to change it just kind of start with her current name and then say the name you want her to go by, then phase out the current name and only call her the new one. Good luck!

| I would definately change it if I didn't like it. It is your dog now and your choice.

| Dogs don't use the spoken language to communicate.... they are all about body language. They understand tone and inflection more than words, although they DO learn the meaning of lots of human words - treat, outside, come, sit stay, and their name. If you don't like her name it will be reflected in your posture and voice every time you use it. I'd make the switch to a name that I liked and enjoyed saying. |

| Your dog will learn its new name..A lot of people have changed their dogs names after they've had them awhile..We had an obedience trainer, when he was teaching us to train our dogs, he showed us with using our hands for different commands..he said they don't know words, but, i don't believe that..I think dogs are smarter than people give them credit for, and they know a lot more words that people think..if you change it do it gradually..start using the name you want to use with the name he/she has already..within a couple weeks, he/she will know their new name |

| It's been almost a month since we got Kobe and we changed it from Tyson. I hate that name for him - he answers to his new name with no problems! He's 3 years old and we just adopted him. So go for it! She will definitely answer to you sooner or later! |

| GO FOR IT! Think of it like calling her by her middle name or her "grown up name" Kind of how like kids sometimes go by their other name in college or as professionals (or how, when you marry a nutter like Tom Cruise, who tries to change your everyday and public name to Kate after you've been Katie for nearly thirty years. )

| She is your dog now, so if you don't like her name then change it. I have always renamed mine when they come home, it makes it feel like I have my personal touch to it. I got Brownie when he was 3 and changed his name to Brownie. He figured it out quickly.

| Many times when people get a dog they don't know the dog's name and have to give them a new one. I like the idea of "a new life, a new name." My dogs have many nicknames and they answer to all of them. Just start calling the dog the name you want to use and he'll catch on quickly. Maybe use the old name and the new name together for a few days and then drop the old name. He'll understand the tone of your voice with no problem and know the new name/word is good! |
