Question Believe it or not: He chewed his collar off

Has this ever happened to you all before~? What causes this to happen~? He is spoiled rotten with tons of chew toys and chew bones. I was so upset last night about it and he knew it He's never done this before In the beginning, he did chew his tags up and I got him a new tag holder that I got from Three Dog Bakery. That solved that problem. Anyways, I need to go to the Pet Store today and get him a new collar

This is one of the reasonss most of us don't use collars on our babies. if he can chew it, he can get his paww hung or hang himself on something and die!!!!!!..May i recommend you use a harness.

Ginger has chewed through more harnesses than I can count.

Then I bought some silk harnesses from Chattiesmom. She never chewed those?! Not sure what the difference was.

Anyway, she seems to have grown out of it.

P.S. If the collar was loose enough to chew...it was too loose.

I need to have a collar on him here in Kentucky. We have a leash law and if he was to get out and loose without his tags on, I would be fine $$$ as well as him being picked up & taken to the pound. I have a nutty neighbor whom is the watch dog around the neighborhood. He calls the city and reports people for their dogs being loose as well as their grass being too tall. Plus, I take him for walks and if he was to get loose, there again, he would be without his tags. I had to register him for the city and get tags. Then he also has a tag for his chip as well as his I.D. tag I had made.

I keep collars on mine for tags too. I know that is a matter of dispute, but for me, having them tagged (they are also microchipped) at all times is important.

Just make sure the collar is a little more snug than it was OR consider a breakaway collar (they make them for cats and yes, they will hold tags).

I can honestly say, that all of my little ones wear collars and have never been hurt. Shelby, who lived to be 16 wore a collar and tags every day of her life. However, I fully understand that I am taking a risk. I've weighed the risks, and decided I'm more worried about them being lost.

As far as leashing my little guys, I never attach the leash to the collar, they get a harness for that.

Good luck with the chewing whatever you decide.

If he can chew his collar.. it is WAY too loose.. in fact, you are probaly lucky he DID chew it off.. if he can get his mouth around the collar.. chances are he got his mouth caugth in it and he is lucky he was able to chew threw it. he could have suffocatated himself if his teeth get caught in the collar and he isn't able to get it free, the first time I put a collar on Beamer, it was too loose and he was able to get it into his mouth, but not able to get it out of his mouth . so it was holding his lower jaw open and he was struggling. I came downstairs and saw him laying on the floor with his teeth caughht in his collar and his jaw wide open.. he was laying on his side and his chest was heaving trying to breath. you can tell how hard it is to breath if you open your own jaw up all the way and stay in that position for more than a few seconds.. It is so important to make sure the collar is tight enough to just be able to slip 2 fingers into the collar from the back of the neck. that way he cannot get his mouth around it. and it will not choke him as long as you can get your fingers in there.

My last dog use to chew off her collar and harness. I went through a few, she was in an in between stage, too small for the medium too big for the small. So I decided to leave them off whenever she was inside and put them on whenever we went out.

This collar that he chewed off was loose, apparently. He's never done that before. That collar snapped together, so I got a buckle collar and a harness for him.

My Chewy used to chew her collar off all the time. Maybe I would put them on too lose, I tried to do the 2 finger thing to make sure it was tight but not too tight. She's sneaky, and can find her way into anything, including somehow getting her mouth around her collar. Anyway, she chewed through enough that I finally got her a collar that is really thick and she could never chew through it. That seems to have done the trick.

Yea, my baby once chewed his tag and scratched it all off. But I have no idea how he would be able to chew his collar off.... unless it was just to loose or too large. Make sure you get one for a little tike. I actually don't even put a collar on my baby anymore. When he goes outside I put a harness on him and he is to busy out there to notice the harness. But he does know when the harness comes out it is time to go outside and he loves it.

I had a maltipoo that managed to chew her collar, when a puppy is going through that teething stage ANYthing is suceptible to being chewed. I agree with the previous post if they can chew the collar they can choke or hang themselves. Also use a harness instead of a collar because most Yorkies necks are too fragile for a collar; and never use a collar or harness except when you are attaching a leash to it and taking them for a walk. Leave it off around the house because they can get caught on anything and get hurt. Finally don't be angry at your puppy acting like a puppy. We are responsible for keeping them out of harms way.

I understand that different States have leash laws. I only use Harnessess with Suzi, and if A dog can actually chew them off, then imo it is not being put on right or it is way too loose.
I have never had A probelm with harness chewing, and have not ever used A collar on A Yorkie.
I agree that it was lucky that she did chew it off, instead of becomming strangled.

Question

He really likes the harness He literally steps into it and lets me buckle it. I am surprised, but then again a treat is always at hand. Sometimes he doesn't want a treat. Do any of you all have troubles with him/her wearing a harness~? Or am I just lucky~?
