| Earliest safe age to neuter? I have read that some shelters will neuter as early as two or three months to make sure that the dog won't reproduce but I am wondering if any reputable yorkie breeder would do this. I'm asking because I'm currently in correspondence with an individual who says that she neuters her males before selling them at the age of 10-12 weeks. I am just trying to make sure that this is not a scam (the cost is $600 with neuter and microchip). The parents are about six pounds so the puppies wouldn't be THAT small at the age of surgery but nonetheless. The breeder has a website with plenty of information on it (even though it doesn't look very professional), a listed address and phone number, promises AKC registration, has given me a picture of the parents, etc. I just don't want to throw down a deposit of $100 only to lose it. Thanks for any answers! |

| I spoke to our vet, he said that they have to do them for the animal shelters at 8 weeks, they don't like too though...he recommends 5-6 mos. for yorkies..I think myself, that is the safest age |

| thanks for the reply! yeah, that's what I thought. this individual claims that she has never had a problem with neutering male yorkies that early but i'm kind of wary. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I've read of many reputable breeders doing this because it's the only way the can ensure that their dogs won't be used for breeding. Now that all these alternative registries have popped up, they will register any dog, and you don't have to have any proof of breeding rights, so some breeders see this as their only option. I think it's a darn shame good breeders have to go to such drastic measures, to insure their dogs won't be bred. You will find some vets who think this is perfectly safe, and some who are against it. I haven't personally made a decision, on the safety, but I don't think you should distrust the breeder because she does this, in fact, just the opposite.

| All I know is my vet said he hated having to do it on such young pups..I don't have any use for any vet that will do it any sooner than 5 mos myself.. |

| Not only do you have to consider the age but the weight is important also. I don't think they can neuter/spay a dog under 2 pounds and most vets want to wait until the dogs are 5 to 6 months. I think weight is the more critical factor than age from what I have determined through reading or asking questions from various sources |

| There's a study that actually recommends NOT neutering males at all. Quote:

| I asked that same question except for my little girl... I asked the breeders... I cant remember who it was but someone gave me a link I wish I could remember it but I cant... sorry but I remember reading that they did a study and it showed that if you spayed or neutered before the puppies are fully matured that they have a higher chance of getting cancer... so they said to wait a year at least... thats all I know... good luck on your decision...

| I'm not quite sure when Baxter was neutered, but I bought him at12 weeks and he was already done. But the only reason was that he had a hernia that needed fixing, so they neutered him at the same time. He has been fine, but I wouldn't purposely do a puppy that young.

| My vet Says.... I worked at a vet for 7 yrs as a tech- They would neuter/spay animals at 6 months. However, there were certain cases where they would have to do it sooner due to hernias. And, I think if they had smaller breeds they would do it around 6-8 months old. I would get blood work done before any surgery

| Yikes, that is odd. Too young in my opinion. They barely weigh anything that young. Some dogs testicles descend late, that is what my vet said about Zanders. He was neutered a week shy of 6 months. See if she can postpone the neutering even if it means you get the puppy a little later Good luck.

| I would hope it depends on two things before the age of the dog. Number 1 - first and foremost would hopefully be the weight of the puppy. Then it would depend on whether the testicles have both descended. I had my Little Mac neutered when he was 3 days shy of 6 months and he weighed 5 pounds, 1 ounce. I'm not a breeder nor a vet - that's just my 2 cents worth.
