| HELLO! NEW TO THIS SITE; need help with matted coat Hello everyone. I have a male yorkie that's 1 1/2. I bath him every week with good shampoo and conditioner. My problem is, he is so hyper after his bath, that he won't hold still so I can brush him. To make a long story short, he is terrilibly matted from half his back, down to his tail. I really don't want to shave him down if I don't have to. Any Ideas? |

| Let me welcome you to the forum! Now back to the problem, I think that if it's that bad you just might have to start all over and get him shaved. If it's only in a few places maybe take some thinning shears and cut into the matt and see if you could seperate them. I hope this helps...

| My groomer cuts into the mat and it will work out easier. Don't wet the mats before you try to get them out! BTW...Welcome to YT!

| Welcome Hi and welcome...you have been given good advise. Sometimes you have to split the mats or shave them off. Each time you bathe a matted coat it will be worst to brush out..try to remove them before you wash him..good luck |

| I think it was Chachi that had some good advice, too. She said she combed the conditioner through their coats while still in the tub. I tried that and it worked great for my girl.

| Chloe had (what I consider to be) quite a bit of matting. Sunday afternoon, I sat with her for a half hour and worked on them. Then I gave her a break and worked on it again. I DID NOT want to cut them or have her shaved, so I worked on them for a very long time. She is such a hyper little thing and HATES to sit for a while, and she has puppy hair. Good luck to you! You will love YT. Everyone always has such great info here!

| Hello there! Combing the hair through when you condition works wonders on a cotton coat. Also using a good quality shampoo and conditioner and detangler. I use Chris Christensen Day to Day shampoo and conditioner and Ice on Ice.

| Groom hin on top of your washer they tend not to move as much there. Always spray him before brushing and if you intend to keep him nice you must groom daily twice a day. |

| I use a spray conditioner every day when I brush the pups. It leaves them smelling so nice, too. Try to start with short sessions and work from the back, sorta like you would get tangles out of your own hair, work it from the ends. Someone said you could put a towel over their head to calm them, but that doesn't work for mine. He is very wiggly and does not like to be brushed. You also might want to use a harness and leash to hold him still. Also, a really good dog food can help the coat as well. I shave bronx, he does not like to be brushed and is a handful. He looks very cute and is very soft. I leave his head and legs long. (but I do have a beautiful girl who lets me brush her and fix her hair)

| you may want to take him to a professional groomer where they have the appropriate equipment and training to remove the mats. Keeping them in a puppy cut if you are not showing them helps a great deal with grooming. |

| Give him treats during grooming until he gets used to it. Grooming used to be the equivalent of war in our house. Now Gracie just lies there and loves it. You must brush every single day. Gracie has not had one mat since I finally understood that she had to be groomed every day. YEAH! Before that, I had to work on mats all the time. I used a razor cutter on her mats and they work great. If you have to shave to start over, do so, but then be sure to brush him every day. There was some good advice given on this thread.
