Question Worried

I have had my baby scarlet for about 7 weeks. I havent been a member here very long maybe 5 or 6 weeks. Anyways I have read many sad stories about the loss of peoples beloved yorkies. This has got me totally frightened! It seems that there are so many deaths in yorkies especially at such young ages. Is this common in yorkies, or are these just rare accurances? All of this reading has got me totally stressed out. Now all I think about is what is going to happen to my baby! Could anybody tell me if im just over anaylising all of this or if there really are things that I ( as well as others ) need to look out for and what we can do to prevent this. Im very worried. I would also like to add that im sorry for everyones loss and that im sure all yor babies are in doggy heaven!

don't worry. people just tend to post things that go wrong with their yorkies. if you got you baby from a good healthy happy environment then your furbutt should be just fine! congrats on your baby! I was exactly the same way when i got koda with alll the stuff i was reading here. I thought every cough was something to worry about. you should have seen me completly panic when he threw up a bit! (it turned out that he gaged on a piece of grass) These little guys will freak you out at times!

I'm sorry we have you worried.

If you get your pup from a reputable breeder who does testing on their parents and the pup is at least 12 weeks old when you get it and you don't push too many vaccines and hold off on the rabies for as long as possible and you watch for hypoglycemia issues, all should be fine.

Yorkies are fragile pups and there are lots of concerns but I knew nothing about any of this when I got Ellie (except maybe hypoglycemia) and she had no puppyhood issues.

Just do the best you can and I'm sure things will be fine.

I think on average yorkies are just as healthy as other purebreds....each seem to have breed specific medical problems to be aware of. Because of their small size they do seem to get into dangerous situations more so, than other larger breeds.

Honestly, I never worried at first when I got Ruby....not until I had been on YT for a few weeks and reading, did I even start worrying about things - like you!

Unless your Scarlet is exhibiting symptoms of illness (did you have anything specific you're worried about?) I would stop worrying and enjoy her.

First welcome to YT. I'm sure if you have had Scarlet checked out by the Vet if there was anything for you to be worried about, they would have told you.

The #1 thing I always tell friends of new furbabies is never take them for a walk outside until they have all their Parvo shots. It's hard not to take them to the park or just for a short walk around the block. But It is a must not to take them. Parvo can't be seen, and is everywhere. You have no idea they have it until they are so sick you take them to the Vet. At that point it is more or less a 25% chance they will make it.(% came from our Vet)

The loss of a furbaby is one of the hardest things in life. My heart goes out to all who have been there. I've been there too, and it's not a happy time, doggie heaven is a happy place, but in my arms is better.

Just always remember Scarlet is a baby, she needs to be watched. They find their way into everything. Princess is still a baby too, a 5 year old baby that is

May you have many very happy years with your furbaby Scarlet!

I've wondered the same thing. I've read so many things on here, I'm not so sure my breeder is "reputable". I had Smoky vet checked the day after I got him, and he passed with flying colors. He is full of energy, and seems to be happy and healthy, So I hope the extra worrying is for nothing - same as yours. Enjoy them, they are a handful! But little attitudes of their very own.

I know what you mean, and if you read the sick forums it's even worse, you can get really paranoid. I think there are a few common sense things that you can do to prevent some of the most common accidents. To me the number one thing you must always do, is never take your Yorkie outside without a leash. Get a harness, not a collar, and leash, and use it every time you take your Yorkie outside. So many deaths occur because the puppy "usually" stayed close to the owner, but darted out in front of a car. These tragedies can so easily be prevented, if you always use a leash, no exceptions, ever.

We have had Gracie for 4 years and Hallee for 3 and things still freak us out from time to time. We are extra careful and have been from the start. One of our biggest thing is choking. Gracie has had her hair caught on her back tooth hanging down her throat where her beard was long and she ended up chewing on it and chewed through her hair. She could hardly breathe it was such a large chunk. We rushed her to vet after hours and he ended up putting her partially out to get it out. They both get shorter cuts now. We have pulled those plastic little strings that price tags are attached to clothes with out of their throats. All tags are cut over the trash or toilet and all pieces accounted for. We can spot any small spec on the floor that other people would not notice. They both will find and get anything that is on the floor. We tug and pull on their toys to make sure no parts are going to come. We have cut off ears ect from toys because Gracie likes to gnaw on them till she chews it off. Tags on toys always come off too. We also never give them a whole treat. We break them up in small pieces and give it to them a small piece at a time. They never go outside without a harness or in their pet stroller. We also have rules for the small kids who come over regarding our furbabies to be sure they are not stepped on ect. Yes, we maybe overly cautious but we don't want anything to happen to our babies. I used to read the threads about yorkies going over that rainbow bridge and I had to stop because I would be crying and have nightmares about things that could happen. Just use common sense about things.
