| HELP: Mad Dashing!! Hey Everyone. I am a new yorkie owner. Hercules is about 13 weeks old and we have had him for almost 3 weeks. He has been doing as good as can be expected with potty training (we live on the fourth floor and are using puppy pads), but recently when we take him over to potty, he will sniff like he is going to go, then just when he thinks your not looking he will make a mad dash to just run like crazy around the living room. I have also noticed that he tries to eat everything in site. When we fist got him we would, of course, pick him up to get whatever he was trying to eat out of his mouth. Now when he has something he knows he is not supposed to have and sees us coming he will make another one of his mad dashes. Whenever we try to just pick him up to love on him, he has now gotten to where he will back up and act scared for us to pick him up. Sorry this is so long, and I know kind of two different subjects, but if anyone could help I would greatly appreciate it! |

| Pasquale uses pee pads. When he first started potty training and i would put him on the pee pad that was in the bathroom...i would put a babygate up in the doorway....so he could still see me but he couldnt make a mad dash anywhere. Now i dont have to use the babygate anymore...and he goes in and uses the pee pads when he needs to.

| Your depiction of the mad dash is comical. I wonder if there is any yorkie owner who has not experienced such vigor. A couple of thoughts: 1. Make sure your yorkie is getting enough exercise. Yorkies, contrary to popular belief, are not simple little lap dogs. They love to run and play fetch (indoor fetch will do if you can't go out) and need daily time to romp and run. 2. Teach the basic commands "sit", "come", and "leave it". Use treats and lots of lots of praise. 3. Use only positive reinforcement. Yorkies are very sensitive. Yelling or other such means of intimidation will not work in your favor, at all. 4. Accept your part as an owner. Clean your apt floors thoroughly. What you leave your yorkie will attempt to eat. Not his fault. It's just the way it is. An emergency trip to the vet will be one costly lesson. 5. Since you are off to a poor start, have treats easily accessible. When your yorkie has something in his mouth, say "leave it" then offer the treat. He should promptly leave whatever it is that he's picked up in favor of something much better. Then praise him. 6. Have enough raw hide chew sticks on hand. Your pup has a need to chew; he'll be losing his baby teeth and new teeth will be coming in. Providing a healthy alternative is key. Learn as much as you can about the breed and keep posting. Lots of friendly, compassionate advice here. Good luck.
