| Long Coat 'problem' with my Harley My 2 year old little fur baby acted very strange one morning. To the point I rushed him to the vet because he would not walk forward. Harley would stand just fine, but would immediately sit back down. No amount of coaxing, inticing with treats would make him walk forward. I imagined all kinds of possible illnesses. But I knew he did not have a fever, eyes were very clear, ears upright, etc. A stranger walking their dog even came by, Harley did not even run up to the fence in his normal barking mode. Just quietly sat there and watched them go by. I knew then something was wrong. So off to the Vet we go! My Vet examined him from head to toe, could not find anything wrong. Guessed maybe he was sore from possibly jumping down off something. So she gave him a shot of anti-inflammatory meds and sent me home with two extra doses for the next couple days should he need it. Well, the shot didn't work. Later in the evening, I was watching him closely and his actions mimicked a fur baby with poop stuck on their hiney. You know, take a few steps, sit down quickly, turn around and look at their rear or even rub up and down against the wall. I knew he didn't have anything stuck to his rear but got to thinking about the hair on his tail hanging down around his potty area. I do have both my Yorkies in very long coats for the first time this year. Anyway, a light bulb went off in my head that possibly the hair on his tail was tickling his rear and he thought something was stuck back there. Went and grabbed my scissors and started trimming up his tail and also tapered the hair on the back edges of his upper thighs on each side of his tail. Low and behold he was cured! I keep both of my Yorkies in a sanitary potty trim but leave the tail hair long. As luck with genetics have it, Harley's tail hair has a little wave to it. The waves just happen to turn inward and touch his hiney at times, especially if its humid outside. As I am a groomer by profession, I told my Harley he had the most expensive hair trim in this county. (what the Vet charged me) lol Just had to call my Vet and give her the news. She got a big laugh out of it, saying she would of never thought about the hair on the tail causing him problems. This one she would remember from now on and would go down in her book of ailments not listed in any of the Vet Medical Sciences. Thought I'd share this with other Yorkie Mom's in case your baby starts acting like this, it could be the hair hanging down off their tail causing the problem (if you have them in long or medium coats). Its really funny how our babies can be so different. His sister does not even notice her long hair on the tail area. Doesn't bother her at all. Just goes to show you, some of our babies are more sensitive than others. My Harley and Abby are two years old and the loves of my life. Take care, Linda |

| Isn't that the truth!!!! lol I told Harley I was changing his name to Sixty-one. ha! Thats what it cost me at the vets office. He's worth it though. Could of been much worse cost wise, as the doctor could of done xrays and blood work. Of course I would of said ok to any tests and lab work. She knew it must of not been anything serious and chose to do the least invasive route first. |
