Trimming your Yorkies Nails

Hello Everyone,

My baby hates and I mean hates getting his nails trimmed. He is now 3 years old and no matter what I do, he does not like get them trimmed. Are all yorkies this way?
It also seems like no matter how much I cut off, even just a litte nail and he will bleed. Its very hard to tell where the quick is because his nails are black. I can trim just a little off and he will bleed.

What has been your experiences with trimming your babies nails?

I know what you are going through I've been there myself. Remy has always hated having her nails clipped even though I'm careful not to make her nails bleed ,I think just the sound of the clippers makes her nervous. I bought a peticure nail grinder (This dremel style tool has a guard on it) and while Tia doesn't mind the grinder Remy's nails are so short that they dont reach the sanding drum very well...SOOO!!! I went to the drug store and bought a metal emery file.I sit in a comfy chair with Remy on her back in my lap and I file her nails . I do this once a week so there's not much to file on each nail ( when I see a small dot in the centre of the filed nail I stop ).This may seem like it would take a long time but I used to spend at least 30 min. just to trim her nails ,she would fight the whole time.She is more relaxed with the emery file and the whole process takes about 10 min. now ( a lot less stressfull for both of us)

I dont try with Sadie. I have the groomer cut her nails when she goes in for her trim.

Yea, I don't even have to touch my babies paws. He will let out a yelp and the clippers haven't even touched him....LOL Almost like hes singing a song. hehe
When I do trim them trust me i barely even snip. Its like his quicks come almost to the bottom of the nail.
Normally i have to wait until the nail starts to crack then I am able to cut it just a little.
I have seen the pedicure for dogs on TV. but I am not sure if it is a gimic or not.

Try a rough emery board. They shouldn't bleed. The quick must be long on your yorkies nails if they're bleeding - you can file them so it doesn't hurt him. I use an emery board on my girls between cutting and if you do it fast - it CAN be done with minimum Drama Queen antics

edited to add - just pick up one in your local walgreens and use the rough side - it really does work

Oh man - I cut one of Darwin's back paw nails too short tonight, and he bled, but just a little bit. I feel sooooo bad! This is the first time I've ever made him bleed - all the other times, he squirms, but I have never hit the quick. He yelped so loud today, then started growling nervously when I touched his back paw again, so I stopped - this was only 3 nails into the whole process...I have the pedicure, but it takes a while to file down nails, so I was trying to hurry the process up today by clipping. Any suggestions on how to make his injured nail heal faster and feel better? I put neosporin on it...

Clipping nails is one thing that I have given up. Pao used to be okay with it for a while actually not really since each time my husband had to hold him while he is squirming for his life. I ended up looking for the one groomer that had 26 years of experience and have her do his nails. At this point, she is the only one who can pretty much touch and cut his nails. I groom him myself and leave the cutting nails to her. I always tell her that I hope she does not retire soon!
