YT Addict | Biting Golden Retrievers Ankles! So I have a weird problem that I just can't figure out... Lexi, our 10 month old Yorkie has been trying to bite our Golden Retriever's (Lucy) ankles when Lexi is inside and we let Lucy in from the backyard. This has been going on for a couple weeks now, but I always assumed it was playful... until this morning. Lexi hasn't been feeling well due to a food change. (Thread) and before I left for work this morning Lexi full on attacked Lucy's ankles and actually hurt her! I had to pull her off! Lucy and Lexi are best of friends, they haven't really had any problems. Lucy is 13 years old and always plays with Lexi, she is so gentle with her. Lexi also see's her as a form of protection, when playing with the year old Doberman she will take cover beside Lucy knowing the doberman won't go there. Lexi won't bite the ankles of the other 2 dogs when they enter the house, just Lucy. It boggles my mind because she is always so friendly towards everyone, and every animal she meets. So any suggestions on why Lexi is trying to bite Lucy when she comes inside? Perhaps it's a territorial thing? I'm not sure. Thanks! |

| Just a thought, but the other 2 dogs, that Lexi doesn't bother, are they short hair or long hair dogs? Does Lexi do this outside too, or only when Lucy comes inside? Could it be that something about the feathers on Lucy's legs that irritate Lexi? Perhaps they have a smell that Lexi finds offensive? Or it could be the movement that entices Lexi to attack. If Lucy isn't standing or walking, will Lexi attach her ankles? Would love to know if you figure it out. Until then you need to enforce in Lexi that this isn't allowed. A spray bottle and a command, having Lexi on a leash when Lucy comes in so that you can quickly discipline the behavior would be ideal. Good Luck!!

| agree with the post above. Also you could add something to the dogs leg that the yorkie doesn't like (deodorant does amazing things to stop biting). Maybe wrap a sock around the dogs leg and soak it in bitters.

YT 500 Club Member | That is interesting because we have a big orange cat, and Sophie always bites his ankles when he goes downstairs to use his litter box. We make Sophie stay upstairs (main floor), and the kitty can come and go both the downstairs (basement-split entry house) and upstairs, but Sophie always waits for the kitty and bites his ankles if he goes downstairs.

| OH that brings back memories. Shorty was my first yorkie, he was 3.5 pounds. When I got married hubby had 2 jack russels. Shorty would bite the back of the females ankles all the time. I think he was just trying to play and her ankles were what he could reach. Not sure why Lexi is being rough with her though. Hope things get better soon.
