Afraid Resident Cat Will Hurt Yorkie Hi all - I'm a new yorkie owner. I'm having a problem that I hope you knowledgeable yorkie owners can help me with. I've had my little boy for 5 weeks now. He weighs approximately 3 lbs, 4 ounces. I also have a resident cat (persian) that I've had since she was 11 weeks old, she's now almost 3 years. She's never been a real friendly cat or what you'd call a lap kitty. She weighs I would guess 10 - 12 lbs. I had reservations when bringing my yorkie home and wondered if they would tolerate each other. Here's my problem, the cat seems to be becoming more aggressive with my pup. It started out that they would just smell each other and the puppy being a puppy took the cats raised paws as her wanting to play, so the puppy would try to engage her in play and the cat would run, which made the puppy pursue the cat. Now the cat runs and then turns on the dog, slapping at him and yesterday she actually leaped in the air and came down on him with her paws wrapped around him. Had I of not screamed at her and been standing right there, I don't know what would of happened. I of course monitor their interactions to prevent her from becoming aggressive with him but it seems to be getting worse. I'm afraid she will one day hurt him. Not only is this happening, it's almost impossible to keep them separated in my home, as well as my puppys interest in the cat litter box so it seems my home is in total chaos. I've thought of rehoming the cat but I feel bad because I am the one that invited this little one into our lives but she's just not having it. Any suggestions would be appreciated. My baby is crated during the day while I'm at work so I know she can't get to him while I'm gone, but I'm afraid that one day she'll be quicker than I am and will get to him when my eyes are diverted or head is turned. Help.

I wouldn't worry We have a 5 month old Yorkie that weighs in at 6 lbs now, but have had him since he was only 12 weeks old and 3 lbs. We also have a Siamese that weighs around 15 lbs. They didn't get along with each other for about 2 weeks but now play together all the time. Yes, sometimes the cat gets a little rough but I just tell the cat to calm down and make them stop. Also when the cat does catch the Yorkie with a claw the puppy yelps and runs away and leaves the cat alone for a couple of minutes and then they are right back at it. The Yorkie actually holds his own jumping on top of the cat in the house and the back yard. They are good friends now.

I think that you should try to monitor them for a while before considering rehoming the cat. They just need to get used to each other and they will eventually learn to get along.

| My cat is huge, I would say six times trixie's wight. he is about eight years, old, they play just fine, but my mother, tells me to be careful, because cats are known for their jealousy. I would monitor their encounters.

I'm pretty sure the cat hates the dog. Her ears are pulled back and her hair is raised and she hisses at him ALL the time. The cat will get in the dogs crate if I forget to shut the door when the dog is not in there and eat the dogs food and drink his water and if the puppy wants some food the cat will hiss at him. So I'm having to scold the cat and get involved as I don't want the cat fighting him over food that's not even hers. If the puppy is in his crate, the cat will stick her paws between the wires and try to slap the puppy if his face is too close to the wires. It's been 5 weeks - I had just hoped it would get better by now. The last thing I want to happen is for the puppy to get hurt.

they are going to go at it on occasion, and you really can't prevent it. I've got two cats, one is 20lbs, the other is 15. My little Ted weighs in at 3.4 lbs. The cats in only a week now "tolerate" him. But that doesn't mean he's hasn't gotten the swipe of a paw a few times. The cats aren't going to hurt him. It may take up to a year for them to start tolerating each other more. Last edited by BigGuySmallDog; 09-02-2008 at 02:45 PM.

Please be careful with cat claws and dog's eyes. My neighbor's cats have gotten into my fenced back yard TWICE and clawed two of my dog's eyes when the dogs went after them. One dog almost lost his sight in one eye. These irresponsible jerks said they couldn't control where their cats went. We have a leash law in our city which includes cats. They did pay the vet bills and I reminded them of our city code using very strong language. It hasn't happened again - but if I find their cat in my yard, I will box it up and take it to animal control myself. Last edited by KCDarcy; 09-02-2008 at 04:18 PM.
