| Did Your Yorkie Calm Down After Neutering Did anyone notice a behavior change in your yorkie after getting them neutered. My 5mths old male has some small aggression problems with items he should not have in his mouth (glass, paper, material) We are hoping that he has less aggression after the operation. Have you noticed a positive change in your puppy? |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I think at 5 months they tend to act like that. It's important to teach them drop it, and reward them for dropping an item. They will test you a lot to see who is the boss. I really believe that, like children, yorkies feel safest when they believe someone other than themselves is in charge. I don't think neutering slowed Joey down, which happened about 6 months, I do think as her turned one he seemed to slow down, and is much calmer than he was as a puppy. I believe research shows neutered dogs are less aggressive, and are probably less anxious because the smells that once drove them nuts, no longer affect them. Neutering all by itself, isn't a cure all, training is very important.

| What Joey is doing is resource guarding and the likelihood that this will change after he is neutered. Now as to having him neutered yes it will help in the fact that he will not have those wonderful male hormones running through his veins and making it words but it not going to change what he got now. Neutering is to help stabilize the system so they do not have to handle the hormones rushes that just are not easy to do even in a dog without aggression concerns. So what to do... trade... We like stealing things and it for attention and yes they are a concern for he could get hurt with these items. If he was a toy work with him taking it and leaving it and dropping it. So you give him his toy he really likes.. and say take it.... you take a treat or a toy of the same kind or better.... pass the toy to him..... if he drops the first you say drop it and give over the treat... now after the treat if it a treat pass back the toy he had.... if it a toy you are using just let him chew it and trade again..... with the treat you give back the toy and he has a win win he got the toy and the treat man great game..... You want him to think giving up what ever he has is a win win and the greatest game besides come. Leave it come in after he drops something he should not have and you hold it and do not give it back but treat him or give him a toy. Leave it is taught by dropping a food treat on the floor and using your foot to gentle block him from getting to it and every time he looks at you or steps back from it you give a treat ans say leave it. The other method is to hold treat in hand and as he mugs you for it wait till he backs off hand and treat him with the other hand saying leave it. Big important thing never let the dog have the leave it item... toss it out put it back in the bag but leave it is no never have. Hope this helps. JL |

| NO! Puppies Do These Things He's a puppy...that's what they do! The game of "steal-something-I-shouldn't-have" is LOADS of fun...why stop it? It's play. We don't make a big deal if he takes something like a cell phone or the tv remote, we just try to remain calm-they sense your frenziedness-and to lure him from it with something else that he prefers. (yes, my cellphone has tooth-marks on it and so does the tv remote)

| YES Definitely! Artie is going on 5 yrs. old, I recently had him Neutered. I waited so long b/c I had used him to Breed w/Abigail my 2nd Yorkie. He is now soooo mellow, he used to be very "Aggressive & Territorial" especially since we lived next door to the Dog Park, we were there everyday! It gave them the opportunity to be around alot of different Dogs and Yorkie's too. He was even kind of defiant and stubborn but now he is an absolute "Angel" and very sweet! I should have gotten it done alot sooner if I had I known it would have changed him so much for the better? Training is definitely very important too. It was very stressful and I always worried that he would eventually get killed by challenging a Larger Dog? But I don't worry anymore since that un-wanted behaviour has Stopped instantly since his operation. |
