| a little advice here: missing pet long story... Let me start out this story by stating I do not want to dodge any bullets just looking for advice on how to proceed: I bought a cairn terrier back in Nov. of 06, this dog came up missing (supposably by the person I trusted to watch him while I was moving~never trust anyone you just meet, SHE just disappeared) right before Christmas of the same year, we were in the process of moving so I lost all his paperwork and figured he was just gone for good. So I called the police~talked to sargeant; and they said that there was really nothing they could do anyway, they couldn't locate this girl either???? ....and it was a civil matter...who knows if they even tried anything? Fast forward to today, yes I know a year and a half later, I found his papers along with all his microchip info. I call it in and find out that he has been registered to people that live about 20 min. from me (BUT 45 min from the "dogsitter"; back in June 07 and that he was "found" as a stray? THey (avid) didn't contact me because I "thought" that the breeder just registered him to me and I never did it, (along with only having him for about a month), so they didn't have my info and "supposably" there was no info on it? not even the issuing vet? sounds fishy???? so somehow he was registered to these new finders? Anyhow, avid gave me the name of the vets office after I explained the story. I have all his microchip papers, flight papers, akc, breeding contract, etc. They said that they never had the pet as a patient and avid must be wrong?? Pretty odd being there are a gazillion vets and they pick that one? SO I call avid back to even ask where they got the info and get a nice man that finally gives me ALL the info, but suggests they are not supposed to not even the vets name? privacy rights? BUT then the vets office calls back and says yes he is a patient and he has a good home/nice couple and taken care of, do they want me to contact them with my info? I suggested yes and hope they contact me on their own, I didn't let the office know I had the info also...The breeder is willing to help in any way necessary. what would you do? I have the names, address, and phone number of the people that have them now (from avid). I just dont' know what to do!! Avid suggested calling the police, but the vet said they brought it in as a stray...I honestly would rather NOT get the police involved and if I did I don't know if there is much they can do?? | This is a scary and sad story. I don't know what I would do. Maybe the people know, but maybe they really did find the puppy and had no way to find you, the owner But also, I'm not exactly sure what the laws are on "unclaimed property", if she had ended up in a shelter they would have adopted her out to a family and I don't think you would have any claim to her. Sorry for this difficult situation and good luck. Last edited by BlondeYorkieMom; 08-20-2008 at 12:24 PM. |

| I did just want to add, I did try even searching on craigslist for him and for the lady that "dog-sat" him. Just another lesson learned on how not to trust someone you don't really know. I am just torn because he has been in that home for a year now and I really don't want to "rip" him out of a good home. Sadly, I would even be willing to do a "custody type arrangement" so this way we would still get to be with him and they would also? I am really torn on the issue Last edited by Jhkkknn; 08-20-2008 at 12:24 PM. |

| OMGoodness hun what a hard situation to be in. Honestly I would call but if he has a great home I would just leave him there because he's probably happy. They are obviously taking care of him but then again I also know how you must feel. Do you feel you want him back? I hope everything works out for you. |

| If it were I, I would contact the people who have him now and ask to visit them in regards to the dog you had that went missing during your absence after leaving it with a sitter. I would take all the paper work over showing your ownership. It sounds like they are nice people and probably really found your pup as a stray, getting away from the sitter. It will be hard on them but if you truly want your dog back I would go for it. You have not had a chance to bond with this dog so be sure you now want to do so. He is leaving a home that loves him so besure it's what you want. If you choose to take him he will adjust in time just pour plenty of attention and love on him. Good luck and keep us posted. |

| What would you do? The question I have for you is: What do you WANT to do? do you want the dog back? Do you want to be reimbursed for what you paid for him? I agree with Archie...contact the people that have him and explain the situation. Check out their home and their relationship with this dog. If the dog is happy, healthy and loved I'd leave well enough alone. I might ask them if they wanted his paperwork and ask them if they would help toward the purchase of another dog for you but I'm not sure about that. It is a tough situation and I'm sorry this happened to you. It bites because someone is going to loose out on a good pet whether it be you or the people that have him now. Good luck and let us know what happens. Last edited by Lou; 08-20-2008 at 12:32 PM. Reason: typo |

| Honestly, I would love to have him back My children went through a lot of grief when he came up missing and nobody wanted to help locate him. But I also understand that he may be happy where he is, which is what is making this so hard. He is like a child himself, you cannot just "rip" him from a home and expect everything to be ok, that I understand.... |

| Put yourself in those people's shoe's (the finders)I was very sad when I had to give up 3 shih tzues I found walking by 309, in hazleton. I had them for 3weeks. They were dirty, but looked as if they were well taken care of. There were not mats in their coats. They were tiny like a chinese imperial. I could tell they were expensive dogs, and house trained, and they were always toguether. We call the police. nobody call for lost dogs. We call the shelter, but the shelter wanted the dogs, and I wanted to keep them if noone called. We put the add in the paper, and sure enough, an indian doctor, claim them as his. No need to see the papers. They run to him happily, and I wanted to cry. They stayed in my house for a total of three weeks. I wished I didn't put the ad in the paper. The point I am trying to make is that, in a year, not only that couple got atatched to your dog, but also, the dog is used to them. Just think about it. I would still try to contact them, just to make sure he is well. |

| I am very sorry that this happened . However, The dog was yours from the beginning. AND you are able to prove it, correct? I know that if a dog is microchiped and not regerstered then they are not able to find the owner... what gets me is that the people new the dog was microchipped. They should have put something up about found dog. This is a pure bred dog, and belonged to someone. I do n ot know if it was the pet sitter who just kept him or not.... I would try and get him back. Get the police report , too and show them. If you really want him back, i'd do what it takes. It is because he is your dog. The people who have him are taking great care of him and all that, but, just because they find a dog, does not mean they should keep him without searching for the orignal owner first.

| I have to say as a dog lover that the best we can wish for our pets is that they are in a happy loving home. I think I would contact the people who now OWN him and tell them your story. But if you want what is best for this dog, I would offer the papers, etc to the new owners and wish them luck and assure them that you are not trying to take the dog from them. It is now theirs. They have loved and cared for him for a long time. Don't break their hearts or the dogs heart by taking him from them. Be happy that he has a nice home and you will get your closure knowing that he is happy.

| We don't know that they failed to search for the original owner. The microchip didn't help since it wasn't registered. For all we know the babysitter gave them this dog and they believed it was on the up and up. Last edited by Lou; 08-21-2008 at 05:32 AM. Reason: typo |

| OH know that is so sad, have you tried to call the humane S maybe they know what is legal and not. I really think I would try talking to the (new owners) first and see how that goes.. |
