| How can I teach him not to bark when he hears noise outside? I live in a small studio in an apartment building. Every 30 mins or so someone will walk by our door which makes Canaan screams like no tomorrow some times... How can I teach him to ignore these noises or make him feel that these sounds are okay and that she should stay calm? Does anyone have any tricks to do that? |

| Have a couple friends walk past your door about every minute (one by one then together then together and talking) while you sit on the floor close to the door with VERY yummy and TINY size treats. Each time he hears them and before he starts barking, say good boy (in a very sweet tone, you know that protocal and give him a treat. If he gets a bark out first, then you say ACK (a bit loud) and touch him at the same time to re-direct his attention, then when he quits, praise and give a treat. Keep this up for about 15 to 20 minutes three times a day. While he is in training, keep him as far away from that door as possible, even if you have to crate him in the bedroom and just take him outside every hour or so. If you seriously work at this, it shouldn't take more than two or three days.

| That sounds like a plan. I'll try it when I make some friends, hahaha! Just kidding! I'll just wait until my wife gets back from vacation and I'll try to do this. Thanks for your advice Last edited by msafi; 08-15-2008 at 01:11 PM. |

| yorkie barking Haaa, Good luck! That's what Yorkie's do. They are terriers, and are excellent watch dogs. The only thing I can suggest is to close the drapes or shades and turn up the radio to drown out the sounds from outside.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I have a several different methods, I read that if you hear something like a trash can banging and they bark, you are suppose to "thank" them and look around maybe check the door, and say "it's all right." This lets the dog know he's done his job by alerting you to any danger. Now, I don't have to actually check anything, I just say, "It's alright" and he stops barking. The other method I use is when he barks at someone he sees walking in the park, since he can see this through the window. I just would shake a can of pennies and say "No Bark" to this. He's pretty good at minding, but if he sees another dog in the park, he'll just run, and ring his bell, at which time I open the door, and he flies to the gate, and barks his head off at the dog. This gives him much needed exercise.

| Good luck!! I thought I had the best dog in the world but Tobey has become more and more of a barker and it drives me nuts. He can see the things he barks at though, out the front window, or when he's out in the back yard. Sometimes he won't bark at one certain neighbor, but then another one he goes NUTS on! And then there is this cat that roams around.....Tobey can not stand the cat!! I've tried spraying him with water, using a stern "no bark", and the penny in a can shaking. One good thing did happen out of the barking though. When I was out of town, my husband woke up to Tobey barking out the front window (he stands on the back of his fav chair). When my husband went to get Tobey to stop, he noticed that someone was trying to break into his car!! He yelled out the door and the guy ran off! Good little watch dog!!

Donating YT 1000 Club Member | My girl barks like crazy! Even if a neighbor gets to close to our fence and I tell her everyday it's ok. Good luck!

WE ARE MAKING PROGRESS. In only 1 day. I am doing it when we go for walks and see other dogs and people too. I reel him in really close to me and get down and make him look at me with a treat. He has calmed down so much. Even my Crabby husband is making comments. WHAAAHHHHH WHHHOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

| barking That is a good thing, taking him for frequent walks. I find the more I walk my two dogs, the less they bark. However, I love the fact that they bark when strangers come around the house, I feel secure in knowing they will alert me to anything. I can see your point however, that this would be a pain in the neck if you live in an apartment or condo.
