| Please Help, My Puppy Bit Me!!! I have had Kandie for 4 weeks and have given her a bath 3 times. Todays bath was no different than the other two but today she was very aggressive and she bit me !! It wasnt a playful bite either she was growling alot and kept snapping at me. I couldnt stop because she still had the shampoo on. Has this happened to anyone else?? Is there a risk that she might bite one of my kids?? What should I do, I am very upset?? |

| dont worry no she shouldent bite your kids if it only happens int he bath. my babys the same way in the bath or getitng brushed. have you tried getting into the bathtub with her? i do that somtimes and hold him in my lap while i wash him he seems to feel safer then. you could also try giving her "or him" a bath in the sink so you dont have to submerge your baby in the water. hope that helps a little |

| Your puppy might have just been very scared.... I am sorry you were bit. You can buy these special washes that are waterless.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I believe it's important to make baths as pleasant as possible, and there are many ways to do this. I think Joey actually enjoys the whole experience, but it didn't start out that way. I put several layers of towels on the counter and bath him in a plastic dishpan in the sink. I make sure the water is the proper temperature by checking it with my forearm. Error on the side of coolness because puppies are extremely sensitive to hot. I fold his earflaps down over his ears when rinsing his back. I'm very careful when washing his face and save this for last and don't make a big to-do out of it. I heat his towel in the microwave and wrap him the warm towel after his bath. He lies very still on the padded counter for several minutes afterwards covered with this towel; it's actually funny to see him lying so still. When they are puppies, it's not as important to get every nook and cranny clean, but to make the grooming process pleasant so that as they get older they aren't afraid of the whole thing. Joey breeders said don't use a reassuring voice, but use a matter of fact voice.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Not sure what you mean by this, biting should never by a part of "playing." Make sure the kids aren't teasing when they are playing with the puppy because this can cause aggression.

| **I am no expert but can give you my experience with Pebbles (formally know as DEVILDOG)! I give baths in the kitchen sink and use the sprayer on the faucet putting it up to her skin and let it run on her body. When I got Pebbles she had never been bathed before and was 5 months old. She was not happy and like a wild woman and even attacked the Petsmart groomer (which is a whole different story). I was wet from head to toe for about the first 3 or 4 baths. Now she is an angle during bath time and stands with her from paws on the divider in the sink. Talk in a reassuring and calm voice as you give the bath. Keep a hand on her at all times as you wash and rinse. In the beginning I would put a few treats on the counter and give these as well with LOTS of praise during her bath. Also, try to do all of this when you are home alone without any distractions ie the kids. If the kids are running around and playing it will add to the stress of the bath. It is almost 1 year since we brought Pebbles home and I have learned so much in that time. I really want to do the very best for my babies so I have read ALOT and hung out here for over 1 year before my first post. I hope this was just a little helpful I really like the idea of the towels in the microwave! I'm gonna do this for their next bath.....

Treats yes, I forgot about this, and don't use them now, except after the whole process is over, but in the beginning, they really help. At least 10 cheerios to get through blow drying. A tip on the towels, for mine, it's about a minute in the microwave, and make sure towel is absolutely dry when you put it in, no wet spots, as these would get too hot.

| aggressive puppies Cassidy is 6 1/2 months now and she doesn't love baths but one thing I read and tried was to put her in the place that you normally bathe and just give treats, no bath. Lots of positive interaction and treats but no scary stuff. It seemed to help. But today it was strange, I think she acted aggressive towards me but not in a bath. Her and Dezi, my 5 year old are always challenging each other with their chewies. Dezi taunts Cassie and eggs her on to cause a chase. Dezi growls but waggs her tail the whole time. Today Cassie stalked Dezi until she looked away and Cassie snached the chew away. I went to get the chew and put it away before they started fighting and when I took it away, Cassie hesitated for a second and jumped into the air towards my hand. She was growling and it wasn't play. I trained her to let me have whatever I needed to take away from her and she got much better, she was never aggressive but always ran from me if I wanted to take something away from her. I tried the Dog Whisperer move today and laid her on her side so she knows I am the boss. She was very submissive and literally closed her eyes to sleep while I had her on her side. She is 2 lbs! But there have been issues between my two girls. They are not friends and I don't know if they ever will be so I can't let either of them show aggression.

| We use a rubber hose sprayer that I found at the hardware store, and bathe in the laundry room sink because it is deeper and they can't jump out when they are small. Just hold the sprayer close on their body starting at the neck and working down until all wet but the head. Then pin the ears down with one hand and hold the sprayer on the top of the head. Most dogs will automatically be looking up at you and the water won't run into their eyes or nose. If any water runs in the eyes, use you hand to immediately sweep the water back across the head. Then add shampoo to body, massaging gently so it feels good to the puppy. Just put a tiny bit of shampoo on fingers and run across the top of head and under chin. Then repeat procedure for rinse. Some of my dogs were initially scared and a little aggressive during first baths, but now all behave properly, with no aggression. Good luck.
