| It pays to get a 2nd opinion I had originally gotten into Yorkie Talk because my vet had said that both my Yorkies suffered from a Luxating Patella, one was a grade 5 and the other a grade 1, but since neither of them showed any signs of discomfort I decided on getting a second opinion from another vet, she examined both girls and could not find any issues with either of the back legs as far as Luxating Patella, this was great news as the other vet was recommending surgery for the one with grade 5. The last vet however indicated that her maltese also suffered from a Luxating Patella and she would not consider any kind of surgery, she felt that giving her dog supplements would be the best way to go as there is no guarantee that the surgery would be successful. She also said the years back most vets would recommend surgery's, however that attitude has changed as medicines and supplements have improved in the past years. It just goes to show just as we would do for ourselves it's always best to get a 2nd opinion when it comes to our little furry companions. Last edited by kpeterson204; 08-09-2008 at 10:02 AM. |

| Thank you for this information. This will be very useful if we ever have to face this problem. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Wow, this is really interesting - thanks for sharing this. That's really odd about the vet who graded a 5. I have one who is a grade 2-ish, and I may take him to see an Ortho Surgeon to be graded as well. I think it's wonderful that you found this other vet, but....I almost think if it were me...I might even get a 3rd opinion, just because the 2 vets had *such* polar opinions, you know? It's just so odd. But, the vet IS right - there are much better supplements now - Cosequin being the best, in my opinion. Thanks for sharing this bc you are absolutely right - 2nd opinions are so important, bc these surgeries are major for these babies.

I agree with this. Second opinions are very useful, but when the results are so different, it's probably best to get a third. I know you want to believe the second one because it's the "best" news, but what if it not true? I wonder what the first doctor would say of the second doctor's findings?

| Conner's LP got better. The vet asked me if I was doing anything for this, and I am giving him Happy Hips every day. He said that must have been what improved his LP so much that he does not require surgery at this time.

I'm glad you got good news! But I have to agree that I would get a third opinion. **I really hope the second vet gave the correct diagnosis! | |
