Default House breaking older yorkie

HELP ME!!!! Marley is a rescue and has been with me for a couple of months. She is just NOT getting that she has to go outside the doggie door to potty or on the puppy pads. Ive tried talking nice..Ive tried a sterner voice. Ive tried picking her up and taking her out when I catch her in the act. I take her out FIRST thing in the morning when we get up and shes goes and I praise her! She has breakfast and then I take her out again before I get my shower. I praise her again!!! Then out of nowhere she will look right at me and pee on the floor. Or poop..Or whatever. She is about 8 years old and a puppy mill rescue. She just doesnt seem to be getting it at all...

What do I do????????

She doesn't know what a doggie dog is and until she grasps the concept of going outside...she probably won't use it on her own. Since she's from a puppymill...she's used to having to go where ever she was caged. when you take her out...not only praise her...say the command...go potty or whatever phrase you want to use....until she goes...then give her a treat. Eventually she will connect that phrase and those treats to her actions. It may take some time, but I betcha within a week or so...she will at least understand what it is you want her to do.

If she goes in the house and you catch her....scold her and take her outside repeating your phrase.

On pooping...I really suggest paying attention to the times she's going. Mine are all very regular in what time they poop. I would take her out around that particular time.

Oh hun it can take longer for her to learn. Remember she's a puppy mill dog. She was never taught to go potty, she was more than likely in a cage 24/7 and pottied on herself. I would keep her confined to a area when you can't watch her but I recommend not putting her in a crate. Poor thing must have been crated all her life. Just be patient and consistant. I know how aggrevating it can get but in the end you are going to be so proud of yourself. I too have a rescue and thankfully for me she learned fairly quick. Now she has free run of the house because I can now trust her. Before that I would gate her in the kitchen because if she had an accident it was easy to clean up. Wish you luck and if you need anything else please feel free to PM me.

Thanks for giving this girl a second chance. So rewarding and so beautiful to watch them blossom right in front of your eyes.

That is awesome you'll have some time this month off. I do however know how hard it is to train them and also work. Please keep us updated. Any pics of her?

I don't know what to tell you. It's surely going to take a lot of patience on your part. It can't be easy to unlearn an 8-year habit in a couple of months and that is assuming that it can even be done. I've never been through that, so I don't know what others have experienced with a puppy mill rescue. I know she's in some of the most caring hands she could have.

Its so hard to know what is the RIGHT thing to do. I am not even good at the scolding part because she has had such a rough life. AND I dont want to set back any advancements we have made already. She is just starting to trust me and I dont want to be stern or scold for fear of setting her back..Im in a pickle..I understand all of it but my husband gripes nearly everyday now because of the carpet. AND I hate to think about even limiting where she can come and go in the house..Im a mess....

Limit her freedom area inside your home (just as you would a puppy) - Take her outside as often as you can, like suggested above use a phrase "Go Potty" or "Go Pee-Pee" or "Go Pooh" and definitely use a Good Potty Treat - something small, I still use a potty treat for pooping (as I have had poop eaters in the past) - mine are so good now, they come to tell me they or the other has pooped, and all because they want their treat. I have been using a Reeses Peanut Butter Chip (I get them in the baking isle of the food store), they are small and tasty enough that they are at my potty mercy...

I think you'll need to limit her access to other rooms. Can you babygate off a room or rooms easily cleaned? Since getting Reggie...the babygate is back up at my kitchen door. I have one that opens like a gate...not nearly the hassle of one you have to step over.

Btw, since you say she comes back in and potties...I would go out with her.

Is the room where the doggie door is carpeted? If not, then can you block her into that room while you are training her?

Puppy mills dogs are very difficult to housebreak. Remember, the poor thing has been forced to urinate and defecate in her cage all her life so the idea of holding it and/or going to a particular place is completely foreign to her.

You need to keep her confined unless you are with her. I'd suggest leashing her to you so can pick up on her signals and then take her to the place you have chosen (pads or outside) when she starts sniffing for a place to go. Then, when she goes, praise her and do the happy dance like you had just won the lottery!

Puppy mills dogs can be housebroken, but it will take a lot of work and even more patience on your part.
