| New Yorkie Baby... Matting like crazy - help! Hi Everyone, I just picked up a beautiful 7 month old yorkie last week from a Yorkie rescue group. He is gorgeous. He still has his puppy fur, which is very cottony and light. It is CONSTANTLY matting. I cannot keep up with it. I brush and comb him everyday, but around his neck where his collar sits is matting, around his leg holes of his harness are matting and little shirts are bad for causing matting too. Any tips or tricks? Are leather collars better than nylon? When does this puppy fur get replaced with big boy fur. I feel so horrible for Tobi each time I find another matt. We are talking 2 or 3 a day easily. Any tips? Thanks fellow yorkie parents! This is my first yorkie and there is SO much to learn! Andrea and Tobi Calgary, Alberta |

BANNED FOR NOT MAILING PRODUCTS PURCHASED | Welcome to YT!!!! My Kibble is almost 9 months old and i was in the same boat. I finally had to cut him down and give him a puppy cut. He looks so cute and I'm glad i did it. It really has helped out and now we brush him so he gets use to it where I'm not pulling all the matts out and hurting him. |

| You might try a spray in detangler (sp) Look in the grooming section below you might get some better tips than I can give just by reading. Previous post. Good luck |

| I had the same problem with Gracie. I used a detangler, and that helped A LOT, but it was still a daily fight. Because of the heat here and the fact that we go on daily walks, I finally just cut her hair. As much as I didn't want to it just wasn't going to work leaving it long at this time. Also, I've found that collars that are round don't tangle as bad as the normal flat type. You can also find harness's that are round. That should help some with the tangles around the neck and legs.

My furkids Donating Member | Try Cowboy magic and a slicker brush. I would'nt leave the collar on him all of the time..or a harness or shirt. This is why he is matting all the time. Lillie has a long soft coat and will matt around her shoulder area just going for a walk. I don't leave their harnesses on them unless we are going for a walk or tied up outside.

| I had to have Baxter shaved at 6 months. The new hair is nice and silky and no mats. It is taking FOREVER for it to grow back out but with the heat here in GA this may be an annual event even without the tangles. |

| I cut all Jamie's puppy coat off at 6 months and I think it was the happiest day of both our lives. His adult coat is beautiful and silky and tangle free. He hated having his puppy coat brushed because it was always so matted. Now he loves being brushed!

| Thanks everyone. His coat isn't really long, but I think maybe a shaving is in order, especially before the cold weather comes here in Canada! Those of you who shave them down, do you get them shaved right down or just shorter? I would love for his adult coat to come in... Andrea |

| I would just cut him real short. I also cut mine around the neck, as the collar does tend to matt the hair. I haven't cut Misty down yet, but I am thinking about it, as she has two different colors on her back hair. She doesn't matt bad, but I do bathe her once a week and put in conditioner. I brush her teeth and wash out eyes and comb and brush her once a day also. They are a little high maintenance dogs, but worth every bit of it. Pat |

| When I cut Jamie's hair, I could see where the puppy coat met the adult coat and I JUST cut the puppy coat off.

| I took Baxter to the local vet who also has a groomer and they shaved him down to about a 1/4 inch. But he was in a terrible mess because he had been neutered and had his dew claws removed and I wouldn't brush him because he was already miserable. It was shocking when I picked him up but he has only had to be bathed once every two weeks or so since then. And he doesn't care what he looks like. |

| Thanks so much. Your posts have been so helpful. Tobi wasn't wearing his harness or t-shirts all the time, but even after a short walk he would be matted. The collar is no longer on all the time and I found a round leather one as someone had suggested. I found a place that has the Cowboy Magic stuff AND he has an appointment to get cut shorter tomorrow! The groomer said we can just cut his puppy coat off, or we will at least try. If all of this doesn't work I am not sure what I am going to do! I am pretty hopeful though. Thanks again everyone! I am sure we will have more questions really soon! |
