| Yorkies and kittens. After coming home from work the other day my husband tells me to come over to this little building in our back yard and to my surprise there is a mommy cat with three little kittens. We've got our dog Buddy in the house who makes the occiasional trip outside in our fenced yard to use the potty and luckily he hasn't noticed these little guys cause they are on the other side of the house. I felt bad for the mommy cat so I went and bought her some cat food and brought her some milk to the building and she and her kittens have been eating like they are starved. It breaks my heart. I also took an old bed of Buddys out there and put in the buidling and thankfully she and her kittens are laying in it now instead in the mess in the building. Anyway, my question is has anyone ever introduced their yorkies (mine is a year and 3 months) to a kitten and the situation gone smoothly? We'd like to keep the kittens but I'd like for them to get along with my dog. Do you think since they are so small they would get used to Buddy? I'm having my doubts because Buddy doesnt like cats or any other animal (birds mostly - he doesnt mind other dogs) coming into HIS yard. Anyway I was just wondering if its possible for a dog and a cat to live in the same house? Thanks for the time. |

| Banjo is around a lot of cats! I have Sapphire, my 14 year old house cat- he is 10 months old- she would rather he calm down and not get so excited when he sees her- but she has not hurt him! Then we have these strays outside- who come running everytime I take him out! I don't like him to get to close to them- but they love him!! The kittens and dogs will probably get along fine!If he cats had not like the dogs that much- they would not be hanging around your place! How sweet of you to feed them and give them a nice bed!! I would take them to the vet- get them checked! and fleas- watch out!

| Thanks The mom cat looks very thin... couldn't let an animal go hungry. It's funny because I think this is the SAME cat that was in our basement a few months ago driving my dog crazy and keeping us up all night making noise. Well my husband said he was going to kill it (not literally but catch it and take it off from here) well a few months later and there she is with her babies and HES the one that said to get it some bologna the other day when we found them, lol. Husbands can be softys too. Momma cat wont let us come to close right now so I'm going to wait a while longer till I'm sure they are weined from her before I start messing with them. The mom cat is mean, hisses at us when we try to get close so I dont know if I can get to her to take her to the vet. Buddy doesnt like big cats but hopefully he will just wag his tail at the kittens. One night we thought an animal was in the yard beause Buddy was standing at the screen door wagging that little tick tock tail.. let him outside and he ran over to a moth and his body was just wagging all over, lol. |

| You could catch her in a trap and take her to the vet. That way you won't get hurt in the process. I brought home kittens I was bottle feeding and Fritzel was afraid of them. He didn't want to gonear them, well except he stole the bottle because he wanted the kitten milk. Maybe if Buddy sees them everday he will get used to them and know they belong there.

| I wouldn't let your dog near her or her babies at all right now. Stray cats are very protective. I took in a pregnant stray, finally got her used to me, and once she had the babies her personality changed for the first few weeks, she would turn on a dime if she thought you were going to touch them. Once the kittens are old enough to walk around and she lets them go away from her, I would say you should be able to interact with them more. If your dog is that fiesty with other animals, you can try getting thier scent on a blanket or something and then put the blanket with him. I have heard that if each animals scent gets on the other, they take to eachother better. The kittens should have no problem getting used to him, they might be skiddish at first but they will get used to him. It's cute when they first see a dog and over react, they stand on their little toes hissing with all their hair standing straight up.

| I have four yorkies and they have been around my cat and three litters of foster kittens and have done perfect! They took care of them just as a mommy would (my boys did too!) The only concern I have on your situation is that you have a stray mommy with babies, she may be very protective of her babies with the dog and might attack thinking that your dog was going to hurt her babies. My furkids Donating Member | I would be careful with bringing in a stray adult cat with kittens. That Mom is going to be very protective of her babys. I have a 22lb Maine Coon Cat who is 14 yrs old. I got Sadie 3 yrs ago and Lillie 2 yrs ago. They DO NOT like him! Poor guy..All we have to do is mention his name and they jump at his face. God forbid if I pick him up! they jump up and bite his fur. I (they) are very lucky that he is so patient with them...he could really hurt them. I don't know why they do this...He was here long before they were. I had toyed with the idea of breeding Ragdolls but, because of the "love" of cats my furbabies have that doesn't look like it's going to ever happen...Once he is gone their won't be anymore cats in our home.

| We adopted Benji (our 9 month old cat) back in like April and we just brought Jack home in July. Benji more or less thought we brought her this giant toy that moves on it's own. She figured out right away that if she instigates, he's gonna "fight" well play back. They get along really well now. I guess Jack beat her up last night while I was at work. She can handle since she had the upper hand for like a month with him. They will do just fine together. But depending on how small they are you may want to introduce slowly so he doesn't think they are toys.

| Mine Love Kittens! We used to live next door to the Dog Park for the past 3 yrs. and on all major Holidays some one would abandon a dog/puppy, last Memorial Day weekend in May. Some one was cruel enough to leave a very young black Kitten, that had a bloody mouth and it looked like they kicked it? Abigail caught it in her mouth and brought it Home, I had her for 3 days......they Nursed it back to Health and shared their water, food and crate with it. Every time it started crying Pom Pom would lay next to it until she stopped, they even slept together! I would have kept it but my BF. is allergic to Cats, so I found her a good Home. Looking back I should have kept it, she was too cute & sweet! They are kind of scared of older Cats since they are so much bigger than them. |

| Brenda (Blowry) is right. The mother cats are very protective if something comes near their babies. Be very careful.

| Thanks for the help everyone. Mommy cat isn't very nice.. when I got home from work I brough her some food and she wouldn't let me in the building with her so I just dumped it out on the ground, then she and her kittens came out and ate. I get off early tomorrow and have friday off so maybe i can try to interact with them. Maybe if I buy a cat toy or something she will come around to play. If I could pet the mom then I know I could get to the kittens. I dont want to take the kittens from their mom though. I dont want them to be sad. Anyway, thanks again. Our neighbor dog was back there messing with them and I heard him yelping so Mommy cat was attacking him! I'm going to keep Buddy away for now because I know he doesnt like cats. Guess we will see what happens in the next few days. |

I have taken in a lot of stray cats, what I usually do is little by little try to let them come to me. I'll put food out while they are watching me, and usually they are so eager to eat that they will inch their way towards me, it can be a slow process, but once they realize you aren't going to hurt them they will come around.
