| Please Advice Hi Everyone, I am Rich from Oakland, California and also new on this board. I am so happy that I found this board. So I post and hope that I can learn more about this breed before go out and get one. My family and I are thinking about getting a Yorkie as a family companion. I am totally new to this breed. I have seen them sometimes and thought that they are so cute... I usually see them in gold/black and silver(blue?)/gold. We prefer the silver/gold one. So we decided and started to look around locally. So far I have seen most of the Yorkie puppies in Gold/Black. Do some of them turn to silver color when they are adult? How can you tell what colors they will be? No offense, colors are just our preferences. Thanks, Rich |

| Welcome! Many of them are born black and a deep brown/gold color. As some get older, their color changes. My yorkie started black and deep borwn/gold and he now has lots of silver at only 8 months of age! Good luck with your search. Note...they are high maintenance dogs. I must admit! They require more attention (in my opinion) and don't do well left alone for too long. They like to be around people all of the time. The positives...they are great kissers , love to cuddle, are hyper as heck and do the funniest things!

| The silver is not blue. the Blue is so dark that when you lay a black watch band beside it it looks blue (the dog. ). Yorkies can take up to 3 years to change colors.

| the blue is often described as steel blue or gun metal blue. My advice is to just learn as much as you can about the breed and do lots of research before you buy. Research and find a good breeder.

| Do a lot of research, go to the YTCA website. This is a very special dog, it's hard to call them a dog, they are so much like children it's scary. I never owned a yorkie until about 1 1/2 years ago, and now I have two. One of each color. All puppies look pretty much the same, it's a surprise what color they will end of being. I am not sure what part of Ca many of the site members are from, but there are several and I think some are breeders. Try to find them, they are great people and would provide a terrific puppy, if a yorkie is your pick. Oh, welcome to the site, you will get a wealth of info here. |

| Yes, you have been seeing the "puppy coat". You really won't know what your Yorkie's adult coat will look like until you see it for yourself as it changes over time. You may want to research the breed more rather than jump right in to one. I'd suggest reading through this forum. Go back as many pages as needed. You'll get the good and the bad. It will be like doing an internship ... hands on rather than just book knowledge. You will find some true Yorkie fanatics here. We all love our Yorkies regardless of age. Go to the photo gallery and you will see how different Yorkies can look. Good luck and let us know what you decide on! |

| Baxter is Blue Hello, Rick! Welcome! You've come to the right place! Glad to see that you are doing your research! I didn't do a lot of research when I got Baxter. When I searched for Chloe I did though, and it truly makes a big difference-you know more of what to look for. NEVER impulse buy-you could end up with a Yorkie who has bad behaviors...take your time and pick the right one. You are right, the color you are looking for is called blue. It's steel blue. It's kind of like black, but it's a blue tint-I am sure you know what I mean. I think the blue color is harder to find because it's more of the "standard" for the Yorkie. All Yorkies are born black and gold. They eventually turn colors. Baxter took FOREVER to turn to see the true blue. He was over a year old before I really noticed that he was blue. He was black and gold for a long time. Chloe is black and tan also. She is supposed to be blue and tan whenher colors change. What you really have to do is look at the parents. That is going to give you an idea of what color the puppies could be when they turn. The breeder should be able to tell you what colors they will be also. The breeder should also be able to give you an idea of adult size and weight. Good luck in your search! They are truly the BEST breed of dog-I love them to death! They are everything wrapped into 1 tiny dog.

| Rich, Welcome! You've come to the right place for yorkie info! Do you have any young children in your family? If so, I would just recommend that you sit them down and explain that the yorkie is very delicate and can't be touched in a rough way and absolutely can not be picked up- they are very wiggly puppies! Olivia was my first toy dog and I'm amazed at how little her little bones are- probably the size of one of your fingers! Children can be great companions for your puppy, but just make sure that they understand how they should act around your new puppy. Sometimes kids under-estimate their own strength! These little guys can be tough to potty train so make sure you're dilligent in which ever method of training you use. Potty pads are a great way to get them started, in my opinion, because their bladders are so tiny. Olivia is (pretty much) potty trained to a pad, but goes outside if we're out there. If you're looking for a great family pet, the yorkie is the perfect choice! They are so loving and affectionate and want (and need) to be around their human(s) as much as possible. I'm glad you've joined us! We're happy to help you with any advice on the breed, breeder referrals, etc., so don't be afraid to ask if you need anything! |

| Hi and welcome... to make this easy all babies are born black and tan (occassionally a blue or brown or red but very rare) the earlier the puppy breaks color on his/her head the better chance you will get the color youre looking for...consult your breeder, ask her/him to point out the puppies that have breaking on the heads (some break early on their backs as well) the earlier ther break the lighter the coat usually...
