| Need some Advice with Buying a new puppy! I am in a search to buy my parents a yorkie. I currently still live at home with my parents and they have fallen in love with my year old Yorkie named Foxie. My whole family has become very attached to her. She is treated more like a child than a dog! I am getting married next May and will be moving out with Foxie and want to get my parents a Yorkie that they can love and call their own. They really have grown a liking to the appearence of my dog..and I would really like to get them one that looks similar to my yorkie. I know it is impossible to pick the coloring because their coloring is always changing..but I was wondering if someone could help me out with the type of a face. Foxie's mom just had a littler of puppies that will be available to take home on Sept 1st. The only thing is my mom would really like her puppy to have a shorter nose than the long snout. My mom just doesn't want it have the longer looking type nose (which I think is really cute) that resembles more of a fox..she likes more of the medium/small size nose that appears to be called a "teddy bear" or "baby doll" face (which I know is an incorrect term and I'm sorry! I just know that is the easiest way to explain it because it seems like its the term everyone relates to now!). I know my mom and dad will absolutely loooove any dog they are given, but since I am in no rush, I would like to get her the type of dog she most desires. I have pictures of the puppy I am interested in buying and was wondering if someone could maybe guess as to what her face may turn out to be (long or short snout) Thanks for all of your help! |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | The best way to predict what the pups will look like when full grown, is to see both parents. While the YTCA forbids the terms "baby doll face" or "teddy bear" a standard Yorkie should neither have a long snout or too short of one, but one described as medium. I would not buy from a breeder advertising such things as baby doll or teddy bear face because it means they don't follow the rules set for by the Yorkshire Terrier Club of American. If they don't follow these rules than they probably don't follow other rules such as health screening. Yorkshire Terrier Club of America (Awards) You can also find a referral guide on the site. Please visit the breeders home to insure that the dogs are being taken care of properly, and please don't buy from a website because most are fronts for puppymills. Good luck in your search.

| Thanks Nancy for the quick reply. I actually purchased my puppy from the same people and they are wonderful people! They are not into it for the money and really love their dogs. They have even rescued a 5 month old Yorkie that needed a hip replacement. They paid for the procedure and adopted her! I have seen both parents. They the breeders dogs. I understand the babydoll face is not standard, and am perfectly okay with getting the medium size snout that is recognized by the AKC standards. Honestly, the dog i purchased for my mom doesn't have to meet all of these standards..I know my yorkie foxie, is not the correct color to be shown, but i didn't buy her for that. I bought her because I wanted a pet I could love. My only concern here is my mother does not want a dog that has a really long snout, and that resembles what some people say a fox like looking face. I was wondering if anyone could tell me if the puppy that I have attached might have the really long snout. My mother has just fallen in the love with my dog and what her face looks like. I understand everyone has preferences on what appearence they like and I would like if at all possible to get my mom a yorkie with this type of face. If anyone could help me out before I put a down payment down on the puppy and give me some suggestions on what type of face they think the puppy might had, I would realllly appreciate it! Thanks sooo much! |

| Before we bought Tootsie I went to a site Breeders.NET: Dog Breeders Search Directory On that site you can type in your zip code and see what is around you. What I did was call a lot of them...told them what I was looking for, a female Yorkie that I would have as a pet. I wasn't interested in showing her nor breeding her. Of course any breeder may ask you what your intentions are for their puppy...and I feel that is their right. I would ask them what their price for a puppy was....females are always more expensive than males. If they were close enough to where I lived my husband and I would take a drive out to visit their home. This way I knew I was not getting a puppy from a puuppy mill...and I could also get to see the breeder face to face. In our case the woman was very nice...not snotty...and she told us all about her home and her Yorkies. She told us the lineage of her dogs and she had both parents on the premises. I knew about Tootsie before she was born, so waiting for that three month period was tough. Any breeder should NOT release the puppy to you before they are 3-4 months old. Once the liter was old enough to show we went back to visit the woman and we chose Tootsie. There were 2 females and 1 male. My husband used to breed Yorkies and Maltese...so he knew what he wanted. That day we brought Tootsie home...it was March...she was born in eary December. Today she is almost 7 years old and such a joy to be around! Tootsie comes from a long line of show dogs...so we were very surprised when we bought her for $800! We were lucky to get her for that...most people I talked to wanted to sell their puppies for upwards of $1500. Tootise is full grown and we keep her in full coat...she just looks better that way. Her coat is the silky variety...meaning it is much easier to manage than a cotton coat. She gets tangles rahter than matts. Tootsie's hair on her back parts naturally...and I don't think on the cotton coat it does that. I'm not sure about that though..someone else may have more experience with that. We get a lot of comments about her when we take her with us. She weighs 7 pounds..what her Mom did. Her Dad was 5 pounds. I agree...you do need to talk to the breeder and meet them face to face...very important. Make sure the area where the puppies are is clean and it smells clean...make sure the puppies are clean. Look at the parents...ask questions, such as their temperments. Play with the puppies to make sure they are active. I heard the phrase baby doll face too...and my husband would say there is no such thing as that..and we would leave. Take your parents with you to look..it will be their dog. Good luck! Rita |

| Thanks Rita, I know my breeder really well. Finding a good breeder is not an issue for me. My question is how can I tell if the Yorkie I am buying is not going to have a long snout. I was wondering if anyone could tell me by the pictures I have posted...If the puppy I am considering buying for my parents will have a long snout or a shorter one. |

| it looks to me like it has a "just right" snoot. Not to long and not too short. |

| Hi there and welcome to YT. I agree with Nancy that you will need to see the parents. The puppy is way too young for me to know what he will be like when older. I do know what your talking about though. The terms Teddy bear, or baby doll face made me smile. We call our yorkie puppy a teddy bear as a nickname, just because she looks like that. But, I know it is not a standard term.

| Thanks Nancy, I have seen the parents. The mother does have a longer snout, but dad's looked like the standard. The puppy now I have came from the same dam and sire, but its snout is not long. If the mom does have the longer snout...is it likely her puppies will also have the longer snout? Or is this not necessarily the case. I just find it weird that my puppy has a very short snout and came from the same parents. |

| It's hard to say. It sounds like you have time to shop. Just take your time and keep asking questions. Call other breeders and ask to see the parents. As someone else suggesteed, if you get one with a really smashed looking nose, chances are it will stay short. Or perhaps look for one that is 6 months old, by that age you will be able to tell. |

| I feel like there is no 100% way to tell. But if your parents like the look of your dog and these are the same dam/sire, the chances that it will look like your dog are very good (especially if they look the same as a puppy). I am NOT a breeder though, this is just what I would do if it was me. The puppy you posted is ABSOLUTELY darling. Good luck! You are a great daughter |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I also prefer the shorter nosed yorkies and my Pixie has a real short nose and Roxie's is pretty short as well. They are both Stardust Yorkies. In my opinion the puppy pictured will definately have a longer nose. If your Mom really prefers the shorter nose I would check a few more breeders. While impossible to know for sure what a puppy will mature into the long nose usually is evident pretty early. I know my breeder knew what tyoe I liked and called me when she had another one like Pixie, so breeders can give you a pretty good idea on what they think the face will end up. Good luck and how sweet of you to do this for your mom.

| both of my puppies have smaller snouts.. so I know what you are looking for. when they were little they also had smaller snouts.. you also should look at the size of the nose, it should be small compared to the rest of the features.. my puppies both had smaller noses and snouts from when they ere 5 weeks and 8 weeks old (when i picked them out). i would say the pup here would have a medium to long snout and the nose looks like it will be larger as well... i woudl keep looking if you really want to find what you are looking for. also, try asking people who have smaller snout babies to post pictures of their babies when they were little so you can get a good idea of what to look for. i will attach two pictures of my babies when they were little so you can see 1. pebbles 9 weeks 2. bam bam 5 weeks 3. bam bam 5 weeks |

| Thanks for everyone's replies! The problem is that I really love my breeder and would looooove to get her one of Foxie's s sisters. Unfortunately, this will be Foxie's mom last litter because she is getting spayed. The breeder feels that she is getting to old to have puppies and doesn't want to put her through it anymore. I have attached pictures of my Foxie below when she was a puppy and what she looks like now. I don't think she has a really short nose...I would guess it is average? I am perfectly fine with the medium size/average nose. I just don't want it to be really long like the mothers (I attached a pick below). Sorry, for asking so many questions. It was so easy to tell with foxie because the day I bought her..I was allowed to take her home because she was older. In this situation, the puppies are only 5 weeks, but she is taking down payments to reserve the puppies until they are ready and it is so hard to tell at this age because they look soo similar! I attached a pick below of the mother and foxie. The first pictures are of Foxie...the last is of the mother. Could anyone guess if the puppy i am interested in is going to resemble my foxie more or her mother? |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | From what I've read, the distance between the eyes, and the distance from the corner of the eye, to the tip of the nose, should be the same. For me, personally, if I really approve of the breeder, I would take any dog she has, because it's about supporting good breeding, and it's really hard to read about a little puppy not finding a good home because his nose is too long.
