| Yorkie on a leash ... I am having a great deal of trouble attempting to put a collar/halter and leash on my 4 month old. She weighs 2 lbs. 6 oz. so I must use something very tiny to put on her. She keeps managing to get the collar/harness in her mouth and doesn't want to walk - just play with it. Am I attempting to do walk her on a leash too young? |

| I think she should be old enough - I used the treat thing - I put harness on Maxwell and let him wear in the house and then worked up to the walk - now if he even see it - he is at the door even when I don't want to go..... |

| I've tried a few things with my five month old pup. I try and hide the collar in one hand and put both hands close to her next and sort of put it on her neck under her mouth so she can't bite it. That's easier to do with a regular collar and not a harness but most of the time i use a harness. Sometimes i distract her with something else and try and put it on or, distract her with the part that goes around her legs so I can slip the collar part over. Other times I just keep telling her we can't go out until she sits and i put on the leash. I hold the leash away and fold my arms and sometimes she get it. What i find amusing is that i'm sure she's totally playing with me because when we come home and i take the harness off she lies down very nicely while i remove it! |

| Ha-ha! She must be distantly related to Kacee! I started Kacee going for walks at about 8 weeks of age. She loves to go for walks and has a big time running around our big yard and walking up the street and back. All I have to ask her is "Do you want to go for a walk?" She runs in and jumps up on the cabinet where I keep her harness and leash. I get it out and try to put it on her and I pretty much have to hold her mouth closed to get it over her neck or she'll catch it in her mouth and won't let go. Then she continues to try to bite at it the entire time I am trying to hook the harness together. I can offer you hope though. She has improved in the last couple of weeks a little. My little Muffin never did this so I was a little surprised. They are all different. She is 17 weeks old. I call it silly puppy syndrome!

| What type of harness are you using? Make sure it is comfortable and easy to put on as well as secure. My favorite for a little one that small is the Buddybelt. There are also some good step in harnesses that work well. I think with young puppies it is just repetition and doing it enought that they just get used to it. The shirt style velcro harnesses are great also. |

| I'd buy a step in harness. I have one from petsmart. We tried the ones that go over there heads but we couldn't get it past his mouth. It tags a tag team effort to get him into the step in one. Here's the one I have from pet smart. I think it itches him so i'm looking for one in a better fabric but this will do til he stops growing. http://www.petsmart.com/global/produ...=1123535847551

| For the tiny babies, someone suggested to get a ferret harness. |

| I tried a harness on Callie and at first she hated it...and chewed it, but while we were on vacation I bought her a different one..the only difference was size and color...she doesn't mind this one!! (She still doesn't walk well, but she wears the harness all the time now!

| Thank you for the advice. I'll have to check into a Buddybelt. Right now I'm just trying with a xsmall harness from Petsmart. I did have some success yesterday - after a struggle got it on her - she romped like a bucking bronco but after maybe 5 minutes left it alone. I didn't take her out just left her walk around the house with it on for an hour or so. Have to see what happens today. Ev |

| Thanks for the advice. I haven't seen a step in harness but then haven't looked for one. It's worth a try. Ev |

| My Rowdy bucked like a bronco too! But then after a few minutes of bucking, he settled down like he didn't even have it on. Then the next time I put it on him, we did the bucking again and some of the mule walking (backing up) when I put on the leash. With patience, he learned. Brian Killcommons (sp?) recommends that you put on the leash, kneel down and call him real happy-like, somewhat like play. When he comes to you with the leash on you reward him and you keep doing that till he learns that it is a fun thing and that walking on the leash will be fun, get him places, and when he bucks, or sits, that is all that happens and he doesn't get anywhere. But when he comes to you, he gets to walk, explore, gets a treat, or affection, etc etc. It takes time and patience, but it works. |

| I would put her in a harness rather than a leash. They have small ones on ebay. Then let them wear it around the house with the leash on to get used to it.
