| Yorkie Grooming Frustrations!!! HELPPPPPP I have had my puppy for about 2 months and have not been able to take her to the Groomers yet. I am not sure how often I should take her, or when the first time I should have taken her would be. I have been a little low on cash but will finally be taking her to the groomer next week. Anyway, I am frustrated with trying to bathe her, brush her, blow dry her, OR get her to let me put her hair up! She absolutely hates bath and splashes around like a trapped fish every time, she does NOT like to be brushed or combed and I attempted blow drying her today which was a disaster. She flopped away from me and ran out of the room never to return again. My fiance and I prefer her hair to grow longer as she gets older so we do not want to cut her, just keep her groomed well. She is almost 5 months now and her hair is growing, especially around her little eyes. I try countless times each day to calm her down and let me put a rubber band or a bow or any kind of clip at all at this point on top of her head but she just shakes her head and bites or barks or runs. On the rare occasion that i DO get one in, 2 seconds later she rubs her paws over her head and pulls them out. She can barely see and I find myself pulling it out of her eyes at least 38745345 times a day only to fall out. Why did I have to get such a fickle dog? My cousins have had 2 yorkies and they were calm and quiet and were even cooperative enough to let them BRAID her hair. I have tried everything I can think of to get her to let me brush her etc. Distractions, treats, this, that and the other ... BLAH none of it works! Any advice on how I can get her to stop being to rebellious come brushing time? I almost want to give up but of course I do not because it breaks my heart to think of seeing her look like a fur ball. I just want to have her hair all fixed up and her tangles out but it seems like that will never happen because she ruins whatever I manage to get done. As if the failing potty training process wasn't enough stress. Also when I take her outside to potty she rolls around the ground in dirt and crap and who knows what else which puts me right back at trying to clean her off and brush her out. Also, what brand of Brushes and Combs do you all use and where do you get them? What I have now clearly is not working and her fur is getting tangly and matted no matter how many times a day or how long I attempt to brush her. I love my yorkie I wish she would just let me do what I need to do!

| Just a thought. Are the clips you are putting in her hair light weight? I find that if the clips are a little heavy, Gypsy will have them out in a heartbeat. I use pony tail holders for little kids usu with bows on them and she will leave them alone. I don't groom Gypsy myself so I can't help you there. I usu leave her short except a small topknot.

| I don't know where you're bathing her, but I bathe Scooter in the sink. I started putting a piece of that rubber mesh that you put under throw rugs, into the sink. I cut it to size and it works great! He doesn't feel as insecure seemingly. It should really help because it gives them some traction. Also, my sink is a double sink. I never fill up the side where he is, I just leave the drain open and use the spray nozzle to wet him down and rinse him. That way, he's not scared because he feels the water coming up around him. Hope this helps. |

| I bathe in the kitchen sink once a week. Be sure to brush all the tangles out before you bathe or the tangles will turn into matts. I brush & comb my dogs at least twice a day. I use a Chris Christensen pin brush and a stainless steel comb (a lot of people LOVE the Chris Christensen buttercomb). Mine are really really good in letting me put their hair up. I just lay them in my lap with their head facing away from me and comb their hair back into a topknot. Be sure to use actual grooming bands that are latex and coated. I then put the bow or barrette in. Rylie likes to rub his head when I put his hair up but he's getting better about leaving it alone. It just takes patience and giving them time to get used to it all.

| Here is the best advice I can give......Stick with it...sometimes it takes some of them longer for grooming... my dogs all did the same thing but as long as you continue to make it a positive experience they will eventually get used to it. To start with the hair ties use something light, *rubber bands* and work your way up to the bows...if they shake it out put it back. When you put it back in and they shake there head say no and try to distract them for a little bit *playing, treats* so they will forget about it..its like potty training you have to keep watching and catch them doing it. Eventually they will know you are the boss and that is what you want them to do. They way I did it was....my dogs LOVE going for rides and I would tie up there hair before we go evertime and in order to go they had to keep there hair tie in. Now they keep it in there hair and b/c they know they are going somewhere they forget about it. Just remember if they can keep it in for few to hour to couple hours and so on eventually you can just put it in there hair and they will let you do it. Hope that helps....Dont get discouraged..sometimes it like teaching a baby. Repetative actions work. Frankie

| Forgot when you give the bath stick your feet in the tub....for me it works cause then they think I want to play and that its safe and MOST of the time they chill out and let me bath them.

| Hi..I also bath Mica and Kali in the kitchen sink and put a rubber mat at the botton of the sink so they will feel more secure during bathtime. Both of them seemed afraid at first of their bath but with persistence now they are enjoying their baths imensly. I think you have to be very firm with brushing for instance Mica used to make a fuss when I rolled her on her back to brush her tummy but one day I just picked her up and looked her straight in the eyes and said no and stay...ever since she is good as gold. I usually brush them once or twice a day to prevent mats and this also gets them used being brushed. I think persistence is the key to them getting used to brushing. Mica is one now and Kali is almost 9 months. As for the type of brush, I use a pin brush made by Mason Pearson (made in England) which is awesome for removing tangles. Our breeder recommended it but the problem is they are quite costly but worth it if you are able to groom your yorkie by yourself and save grooming bills. I think it was worth every penny though. I also use a wide toothed metal comb to go through them after brushing to take out any remaining tangles. I heard that you should always brush the coat wet and not dry as it could damage the coat and it also makes it much easier to remove the tangles. I'm not sure if you are using a detangler but I do and in addition to this, I always giving them a good brushing before baths so they won't mat and this seems to help keep tangles at a minimum. Hope I was of some help to you. |

| I had the same frustration with Abby, but it has gotten so much better! Hang in there. Abby just turned 6 months old and she's been a lot better the past couple months. One thing that worked for me was to put a handful of cheerios in my lap with Abby and let her have at 'em while I was brushing her. You can get a dematting comb for those matted spots. I love mine. I bought it on ebay, but I'm sure you can get one at petsmart too. Do you conditioner her hair when you bathe her? How about a detangler?

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Great advice! I also bath mine in the sink. At 9pm I get the grooming stand out and they all get their turn getting groomed and teeth brushed. I find when they are a little more tired it is easier. Roxie who is 10 months old has gotten so much better since I do it every day at the same time. They also get treats after. I use a slicker brush and a pin brush and a comb. Keep trying he will eventually settle down.

| I believe they are lightweight, yes. I think that she just knows that I am putting something in her hair and she doesn't like it.

| Where do you find detangler for dogs? I haven't seen it any of the places I have been, and where i live there is only Wal Mart and a PetSupplies Plus. I don't feel like going to 39485345 places to look for a comb so I thought I would ask here first

| Oh one more question. How harmful is it to use human conditioner and detangler? Is it ok or is that a No no? I noticed the yorkie specific stuff can be costly and was just wondering
