Angry vent: so frustrated about not having a lot of money!

okay, so i recently decided that adopting a yorkie from a rescue shelter would be a good idea. i wanted to help save an unwanted yorkie as well as saving some money by not purchasing from a breeder.

well, it turns out that a lot of the yorkies at shelters cost nearly as much as what i paid my breeder for Kash (my current furbaby)! i understand that shelters are non-profit, and the adoption fees go towards helping the other dogs at the shelter, but i'm so frustrated because i just CANNOT afford it.

i want SOOOO badly to give an unwanted yorkie a second chance, but i simply can't cough up such a large lump sum of money all at once. i recently inquired about a yorkie girl for adoption from UYR, and the fee for her was $600! i paid $750 for Kash... so it wasn't much of a savings (for me).

i know that it shouldn't be about money. it's about saving a dog and helping the others, but when it comes to compromising my own lifestyle, i just can't do it. i still have to pay bills and eat food, ya know? the lady from the rescue told me the amount of the fee depends on the health and age of the dog. the girl i wanted was 6.5 months old and super healthy, so that's why she cost so much... but if i chose a 6-10 yr old, the fee would (maybe) be a few hundred dollars cheaper (which in my case is still too much $$$).

sorry for the vent. i hope i don't cause a heated discussion about why i should just pay the fee and suck it up. lol.

thanks YT!

I agree. I thought the fee rescues charged was to cover the amount they had invested in that particular yorkie, but I may be wrong.

I also understand that there is alot of cost in caring for these animals in shelters, but I feel that if the fee to adopt was less, more people would adopt and there would be less puppies in shelters.

a win/win I'd say.

You are so right. a couiple of months ago before finding out about sammy and he might need surgery, we wanted to adopt one. THe adoption fee was $625. She was 11 weeks old. Senior were $150.
I was considering it, the dog is neutered/spayed, has hervaccinations, you get a puppy package. The one particular place I was looking at did offer this. Here in NY, vet care is very expensive. SO subtracting the neuter ($150) and all shots up tp 12 weeks (probably close to $200) it wasn't a bad deal. But I do understand your frustration.

I agree with you, i think that they do charge way to much! I also understand that shelters are non-profit, and the adoption fees do go on helping the other dogs BUT you are adopting an unwanted yorkie, giving it another chance!! For it not to go to the right home just because people cant afford the amount the shelter want for it i think its just crazy and defeates the point alittle!! If people wanted to pay that much for a yorkie am sure they would go and find a breeder instead. I dunno but i do agree with everything you are saying i do think it is unfair. i still hope you get the little furbutt tho hehe!!

I'm so sorry for your bad exp. with adoption, unfortunately a lot of shelters are actually jacking up the prices on purebred dogs that are popular at a given time- Yorkies rate really high! The shelters figure that they will cover the cost incurred for the individual dog plus the excess amounts can be used for spay/neuter,shots,htwm testing or treatment on other less in demand dogs...I know it's not right but when I questioned the high cost thats what the shelter manager where I voluteered told me

Yes I thouht I would checkout the adoption thing as well. I was shocked at there prices. For one thing I know nothing for sure on this dog and why would I do that when I could go and get one through a breeder the same or cheaper. I just don't understand when they want t get rid of these dogs and into homes. Its really cutting there cords I thinks.

I agree about costs being too mcuh and I work with a Yorkie Rescue! What we rescues need to do is raise money for the rescue by raffles, yard sales etc, not adoption fees.
Being a Yorkie rescue, the dogs will cost a little more than your average doggie, ok, but 4, 5, 6 or 7 or more is outrageous!

I quilt and try to donate those. I will be donating clothes and anything I can to help raise funds so that it doesn't come from those who will be giving our charges another chance.

This is exactly why is is so important to give to the charities either things they can raffle or money. It all helps keep the fees down.

I totally agree. I looked in to adopting becuase I would love for Topper to have a playmate other than the grouchy cat. But as other's have said I just can't afford it at this time. I was really surprised at how high the adoption fees were. I guess it is just reality that everything is over priced these days.

Right now it sucks! Money is tight over here too. But when i come home to that smiling face and kisses money problems all go away. When it comes to taking care of your furbaby just research other places where you can get cheap food and supplies. Join pet stores clubs and they will send you coupons. Good luck and keep your head up! everything will turn out fine.

I was also looking at "rescues" before I got Gabby. I ended up finding her on Craigslist for $300. Still pricey to rehome a dog someone doesn't want, but not as much as the rescues. I just kept looking every day and missed out on a couple by a few hours. (They were probably not meant to be). We got really lucky with Gabby, because she is such a lover and a good girl. The owner really didn't know her own dog, because only a couple of things she told me about her ended up being true. We have allergy issues, but since I have adopted her and changed her diet she has improved dramatically. Her coat is softer and shinier and she doesn't scratch near as much. Her hair is also growing back on her rear foot that she had chewed off.

Okay I don't want anyone getting offended over this but....
I also volunteer for a rescue and I also adopted Gabby from the rescue. She's 2 yrs old and health is great. My adoption fee was 500.00 but she was already spayed, had blood work, up to date on shots & had a dental done. My vet charges over 500.00 for spay and dental alone. I also had no problem knowing that part of the money was going to save another baby's life.

My other thing is if you cannot afford a high adoption fee then you should consider adopting at a later time. Anything can happen to these little ones and you have to be prepared to pay for high vet bills. I have seen so many little ones come back to rescue after being adopted because they got hurt or sick and the owners could not afford the vet bills. Again sorry if I offended anyone but this is how I feel but I also want to thank you for thinking rescue.

I need to state that costs are different all over the country. 500 here in NC is outrageous considering that purchase price of a AKC puppy is 600. In CA, prices are much higher, so it really does depend on where one resides.
