| New to the Forum! Quick Question.. Hi Everyone! Me and my girlfriend are new to YT and just wanted to post and say how grateful we are from all the information we've received from the forum. We are brand new puppy owners, just brought home our new girl Jackamo who is 9 weeks old last Saturday. She has been absolutely amazing and extremely smart. Aside from the first night she now uses her pee pad flawlessly and is even sleeping through the night. I was also able to get some great tips in the training section on getting her to sit on command! Being new puppy owners we do have lots of questions. We living in a condo which is basically all carpet, we were told by our breeder to avoid having her on the carpet at all times because she'll love it and want to pee on it. So we have her in a gated tile section with all her belongings(food, water, toys, crate, pee pad) and she absolutely loves it. Our question is, how long should we wait till we introduce her to the carpet? I do work at home and am able to watch her all the time. Eventually we would like her to be able to play in the living room and not always have her gated off. We're just wondering if we should introduce her to the carpet now while she's still young, or wait till she's older. Any thoughts or suggestions would be great. And sorry for the long post |

| Hi and welcome to YT...glad you were able to find a wealth of information already. You will continue to get more, let me tell you...this site is full of experienced yorkie owners. Can't help you much on your question. She is still fairly young so I would keep her gated for now....I guess taking her out of the gated section for play time in short increments wouldn't hurt either as long as you keep a close, watchful eye. It sounds like she's doing well with the pads so it shouldn't be long before she gets more roam of the house. I personally didn't do much of the gated thing and all my girls pretty much had free roam as long as I was home...I did have pads everywhere though so if you do take her out I would make sure pads are close by or in whatever room you're in so she is able to see it and go to it when she needs to.

| Hi Welcome to YT. As long as you are there watching her really close I would take her out in small amounts. You have to really watch those little ones they are so quick and low to the ground and will go on the carpet if you take your eyes off her. But as long as you do it and watch her then that is more training on your part for her.

Donating YT 1000 Club Member | Normally if you have her go potty on the pad you can them play with her on the carpet. They do give signs before the go to the bathroom. She may sniff arount, circle, and squat prior to actually going. As long as you watch and are playing with her it should be OK. Just start slowly and make sure there is a pad available for her to go to. Depending on the dog it can take up to a year to fully train one. Welcome and good luck!

| Thanks a lot for all the responses. We're going to try and put her on the carpet for small amounts of time to play with her and we'll definitely keep an eye on her at all times. We have recently started to bring her outside, so hopefully with the pee pad and the grass she won't have the desire to go in the living room. Thanks again.. And we look forward to asking many more questions! |

| Welcome to YT and congrats on your new furbaby! My best advice is to get her to go potty on the pad first and then let her play on the carpet for a little bit - but only after she's gone potty so that she doesn't have to go for a while yet. Then every hour or so put her back on the pad to go. This should emphasize that the pad is for potty and the carpet is for playing! Good luck!
