| Concerns about working full-time Hi, I have a soon 10 week old male Yorkie puppy and we have had him in our home about 2 weeks. He is so cute but has some of the other 'issues' I have seen discussed here (chewing, biting, whining). I have no experience with the breed and he is my first dog as an adult. I am able to work from home, luckily, at least until the end of this week. I am nervous about leaving him when I work. I will put him in a large steel crate for his safety (no chewing on wires, baseboards, etc) and will walk him before work and after. I am looking for some advice if anyone has gone through a similar situation and has some tips and comfort for me in going to work. I know it is ideal to be at home, but we need two incomes and one income just does not work for us. Thank you all in advance for your help and understanding. |

| As long as you walk and play with him he will be fine. He will most likey sleep while your gone. I am home during the day and mine sleep most of the day and liven up when my Husband gets home. Maybe leave him a tshirt with your smell on it and a bullystick to chew on

| Thank you! He does sleep a lot when I am home now as well ... thank you for the advice. I have not heard of a bullystick - what is it? We are training Rocky on pee pads and he is doing quite well, as long as we watch him and redirect him. I hoped that he would be able to use the pads when we go out so he would be more comfortable and not have to hold it - although he does very well at night, sleeping the majority of nights so far. Thank you for the advice ... I really appreciate it! |

| Make sure you give him a lot of chew toys too something to keep him preoccupied. I give mine the hide a squirrel toy and some squeekie toys and they are fine. I just make sure to let them out when I get home to tire themselves out....hehe...they are like kids..goodluck

| I got Harls when she about 10-11 weeks old, and due to the circumstances, I was only able to spend 3 days with her before I had to start going to work. I leave her in the master bathroom with a babygate blocking the door. I leave the tv in the bedroom on (animal planet) and a lot of sunlight comes thru the bedroom windows so it is not dark. In the bathroom, I have her crate, with bed, almost all her toys (a wide variety) and a bowl of water. When she was younger, I used to leave food during the day because I did not want her blood sugar getting low. Now, I stuff a kong with kibble and a few snacks and she eats that during the day. (I thought the kong would give her something to chew on, but she just bats at it until the food falls out). I also leave her some potty pad by tub, which is away from her bed and play area. I play with her in the morning and a lot at night. And I take her on walks and practice her commands with her when I get home. She does fine. She is always happy when I come home and she really doesn't make much noise during the day (I have a roommate who tells me - he won't let her out. He doesnt want to watch her). When I am home all day (weekend or "sick" day) she usually spends most of the sleeping, which I imagine she does a majority of the time while I am gone anyway. |

| Thank you MrsPeanut and House for the replies! Very good advice, and I see now that it can be done successfully and a happy Yorkie is still the result! I feel so encouraged ... House - it sounds like you have a set-up very much like I will have. How old is your little Yorkie? Right now Rocky uses the potty pads - but if it is not changed often enough he rebels and uses the floor! When did you stop leaving food out in the day? Right now Rocky is 2.8 pounds (he is 10 weeks tomorrow). We have a puppy Kong and he does not seem to like it as much as squeak toys or small Nylabones. I hope that will improve though as I think it could be fun for him. |

| I know when we got our furbie at 8 weeks old, she did cry when we left for work, i can hear it ringing in my ears as i left. we shut her in the kitchen and utilty, left the radio on, food toys and bed . It did take 2 weeks of crying before she stopped , my neighbour said she just used to cry o, n and off during the day. She did get used to it and i think she mostly sleeps as she doe snt play with her toys and seldom eats until e get back home. |

I always leave food out for G. She seemed to eat more often when she was younger. She is 6 months old now, and I've noticed her eating more on a regular schedule. She'll eat a little during the day, but mostly eats a good meal in the evening. But it's always there for her if she ever gets hungry. Oh, and congrats on the new baby! I'm sure you will have years of great adventures and memories with your little guy.

Interesting that many Yorkies demand a clean potty pad - but as you say, it makes sense. On the subject of potty pads ... does your Gracie also try to use the edges versus the centre? This has resulted in some "overflow" to the floor and I am not sure how to correct this ... he obviously is aiming for the right area so I still give him a "good boy!" and a treat ... any advice on this?

I was worried about her blood-sugar getting low (I read this can be a problem with yorkie pups). But I stopped leaving food out because we would have obedience class in the evening, and if she ate all day, she wasn't interested in her snacks for training that night. Harley is 6 months old now and about 2.7 lbs. Her use of the potty pads has gotten better over time. On occasion, she will stand on the edge of the pad and pee half on the floor, but A LOT less than she used to. And every once in awhile, some poop might drop out after she left the pee pad. (Gross, I know). I change the pee pads every night when I get home from work. I mop the floor with a swiffer (easy easy) too. But I leave three pads out at a time. 2 on the floor and 1 in a litter box that I am trying to get her to use, though I have not been real diligent about that. I imagine if she only had one pee pad she would quit using it after 3 or 4 times. I plan to eventually let her have run of the bedroom all day while I am gone. She will have more room to play and will be able to sit in the windowsill (which she LOVES). I just do not trust her 100% yet to not poop under the bed or scratch the bedroom door when my roommate comes home because she can hear him but he doesn't let her out.
