Under bites

Okay I am looking at this one little puppy yorkie.....I haven't called the breeder yet because I wanted to find out more before I do.
My question is what concerns do I need to have on a yorkie that does have a under bite? The breeder does state the underbite, so she is not hiding it, I would just like to know if any of you guys have this issue and what concerns or health issues could come into play with this. Believe it or not she is a SHE and she is awesome looking puppy but I want to know more about the underbite. I believe this is the only one I am willing to change my mind on when it comes to switching on the gender.

For me I don't really care about the bites. My yorkie is overbite and it has nothing wrong with her.

How old is puppy? Some underbites correct themselves as puppy gets older. This may or may not happen though. It really isn't an issue unless you wanted to show or breed her. It's considered a fault.

It's a show fault but doesn't cause any health issues.
In my experience overshot or undershot bites, unless extremely mild, rarely right themselves.

If you're not planning to show & you don't mind the look, there's no reason for it to put you off buying the puppy.
Over here most puppies with a faulty bite would be sold as pet quality at a slightly reduced price.

My girl Mimi has a underbite and she's never had any problems.

Unless the bite is so off that it interferes with eating or causes dental problems, I wouldn't worry about it. I do know one member on another forum whose little Chi had such a bad bite he had to have orthodontistry, but I think that is unusual.

Has this puppy been checked by a vet? I'd speak to the vet about it and see if he could fax records over to your vet before you decide.

My Bernie had an underbite when he was younger. Now that his front adult teeth are coming in it appears to be a little closer in line now. I was concerned about it at first and started a thread about it. Most folks said they thought it was cute and it looked like their baby was smiling!

my maggie has an underbite and she's fine, unless you plan to show or breed it shouldnt be a problem

Corky has a current underbite...but he has only just lost his tiny front teeth at 5 months and the new ones came in and I noticed it then after he had been fine before....he still has baby teeth from k9s back, so I don't know if it will correct itself, but it is very slight anyway

My Tink too.......her top jaw is longer than her bottom, just a small amount, no-one has even noticed!

When she had her 'op' last month I asked the vet to check it out and she said, nothing to worry about, teeth are meeting find, so ok for eating and chewing. Nothing there to worry about and a very common problem in small breeds.

(But saying that, our late irish wolfhound also was this way.)

Hello, I was told by a mentor who is retired now but breed yorkies for 13 years, that sometimes when the permanent teeth come in they can correct these issues, she also said she has seen a good bite change when the permanent teeth came in?
What is a rule or generality aobut this.

Yeah I believe I will call today. And ask for some really good baby shots with her playing and stuff. I also need to see the parents too. She doesn't have them posted on her site. Bad thing is she is further way from me so I either drive to pick her up or fly her to me. The gas prices are crazy so it would cost more then shipping but I am afraid to ship one.

You should be fine to enjoy that sweet furball. Most of the time its nothing for you to worry about as far as health issues. Its only when you show or breed that its a problem and not acceptable.
