| What age does a puppy start getting adult fur? Bernie's puppy coat is very thick and long, it's really pretty. He's 7 months old now, and I'm confused about this adult hair thing. How can you tell if it's puppy hair or adult hair? He's turning a little silver on his head, but only has a few hairs of silver on his body. It's predominantly black. Just curious to know when to expect a change...or if there will be a change.

| My memory isn't so great. lol I think it started around 8 months. But what you are seeing - the silver - should be the adult coat. It feels much nicer than a puppy coat generally.

| As the silver comes in...does the black hair shed? Or does the black hair turn at the roots? Sorry I'm so dense guys.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I really didn't see any dramatic change in color, his hair on his head at one time was pure silver and then it seemed to be beige, but I don't know when it happened, and it didn't seem like it happened from the roots. His saddle has always been the blue/black. By the way, I think with yorkies you call it hair, not fur, because fur is when they have the double coat, and that's when they shed. Yorkies hair is very similar to humans, in fact I wish mine were as silky as Joey's.

| I'm sorry. I didn't see this sooner. No, it doesn't shed. It turns silver at the root. So, you will have little black tips as the hair is trimmed if yours does what mine did.
