| Toby Blue 14 weeks old Kennel Cough Toby turned 14 weeks yesterday and so did his brother Asher. June 28th Toby and Asher recieved the nasal Bordetella Vaccine as a part of his normal vaccine treatement. Asher is doing fine... Toby not so much. He contracted a slight cough July 4th but we didn't see much of it through the weekend. Nothing major and vet said he may have a little cough for a few (5) days. Yesterday we took him in the vet because Wednesday (July 9th) he woke me up with a coughing attack. The vet gave us a cough suppressent but said if it was Bordetella he didn't want to put him on antibiotics just yet. Toby had an allergic reaction to the cough suppressent! We took him in to the Emergency vet as soon as we noticed the reaction. The vet did good and gave him a steriod injection which fought against the allergic reaction, he was back to his normal self except the coughing was still there. She gave us Predinsolone which he will be taking for the next 8 days. I asked her about antibiotics for the cough since it sounds exactly like kennel cough. She said the cough should go away on its own and to proceed with the medicine she gave me. Well we got home about 10:30pm from the emergency vet. Toby had a major coughing spell at 2:00 AM this morning and I have been up since then. He hacked up some mucus during this spell which worries me even more. Tomorrow I am taking him to a different vet, the one we use for our 2 other Yorkshires. I have heard of pups passing away because this virus converts into something worse... so I want to see if another vet will perscribe him antibiotics. And hoepfully this will prevent from spreading it to our other dogs (they all have had the Bordetella vaccine since we take them to dog parks and groomers and none have had a reaction). I noticed a few other threads with this topic but wanted to see if anyone had good success with the antibiotics or if we should try to keep him off of them. I am going to make sure it doesn't have anything that Toby reacts allergically too. The reason they got the Bordetella is because in late August we will be traveling to Texas and boarding the 4 Yorkshires at a place called Aunt Kate's. She takes care of small breed dogs while their owners are gone, its a none kennel house and the lady is really sweet. Dogs have their own part of the house and a backyard. Right now the little guy is sleeping on my lap. His coughing spell is over. Last edited by lowviscosity; 07-11-2008 at 03:30 AM. |

| Awww, poor baby Honestly, I would insist on antibiotics because Kennel Cough could very easily turn into Pnuemonia Our vet no longer uses the nasal vaccine, he said there's been too many cases of animals getting very ill from it. The shot doesn't have that problem, according to him. When I first got Luna, she got sick from the nasal. Last week, she got the shot and had zero reaction to it

| boy this kennel cough vac is a real catch 22...if you get the vac they can get sick..and if you dont thay can get sick....anyway i hope this helps...my Riley Blue,,,has kennel cough that turned into pnumonia..(he came that way from the breeder).he was also 14 weeks old..he was a very sick pup..I took him to the vet as soon as we got him and she put him on antibiotcs..and prednasone..he was starting to feel better by the next day.but he continued to cough and weeze for 5 days. and my vet also said no cough suppressants because you want the stuff to come out of their bodies. if he is coughing up mucus he must have some conjestion and you want that to come out..the prednasone is probable opening up the airways for it to come up..I also spoke to a second vet just to make sure and he told me to try feeding him homade chicken soup.for one week. but to make sure it had garlic and parsley and celery and carrots. he insisted that there really is something to chicken soup helping you gett better ffom a sickness..and thats is what i did..it has been 7 days since i first started the antibiotcs and the chicken soup..and he has made a full recovery..his coat even looks better.and he had sever pnumonia...if he wont eat the chicen soup you can but it in a blender and use a syringe to feed it to him..to make sure he eats it...I also put riley on a puppy vitimim...and gave him a little nutri cal. to help him with the extra nutrients to help him fight his sickness...and if you are waiting on your vet to give the antbiotics..you can get started on the chicken soup now if you want...and I used fresh ingredients too..like fresh garlic..and fresh parsley...hope this helps |

| The vet last night gave us Prednisolone (this is the spelling on the syringes). Is this the stuff you are talking about? Last night after he was admistered it he hacked up a lot of mucus. Today he is in a little play pen away from the other dogs so he doesn't try to play. I have gave him his first dose of Prednisolone this morning at 6 AM his second dose is going to come at 2 PM. I am debating on still taking him to the vet, but the vet is open tomorrow so I may just wait since the emergency vet gave us Prednisolone. So your vet gave you the Prednisolone and Antibiotics? This dosage goes for 6 days. I will also give him some chicken noodle soup. Last edited by lowviscosity; 07-11-2008 at 11:21 AM. |

| I had to deal with a puppy with kennel cough once. She was first given amoxcillan...that didn't help....next was clavamox...that did no good either. The vet was reluctant to give anything stronger to a pup but finally gave me some Temaril for her. It cleared her up in just a few days. |

| I hope he's alright! When we got Dixie she had kennel cough, and she too was around 14 weeks old. We spent almost as much as we did to buy her on medical bills, it was crazy. But it was worth it. Good luck!

| Mine got kennel cough from the intra-nasal vaccine. My vet doesn't give antibiotics but did give a shot for inflamation (prob the same as Prednisolone) and gave me a liquid cough suppressant. Chloe passed it to Zoey and they had it for several weeks. They would cough until they gagged. It cleared without antibiotics, but it did take several weeks. Good luck.

| Yeah the vet perscribed Clavamox to me today. He said as long as Toby is eating, drinking, playing, and not acting lathargic he should be okay. Our vet also said that it could take a few weeks much like bronchitis is in our bodies for a few weeks during medicine. I've read on a few vet sites that Clavamox works well so we'll just closely watch Toby. The other 3 Yorkies we have aren't showing any signs of sickness. Beckham and Daisy get their update to Bordetella this coming up Wednesday (shot) and Asher had his nasal boretella and is doing fine. I asked the vet if we should seperate them at all now... he said no because they have already been exposed and if they are doing fine then its okay. So now we are having him take the Prednisolone (he had an injection at the vets emergency off and is taking it daily now) and the clavamox. They said these two medicines should clear him up. I feel more comfortable now but will be staying in during the weekend to watch him. |
