Default Question For Those Who Have Struggled Financially...

or do so now..

Has it ever crossed your mind to breed your dog to make a fast buck?

I ask this because I've had people tell me that they "can not" work so breeding their dog repeatedly is the only way they can make ends meet.

I have been down the path of being financially and emotionally broke down, and NEVER did I ever think of breeding a dog to "make ends meet."

Am I alone in this?

When I see a pure bred dog, my mind doesn't go wow! I could make a fortune on pups from that dog! The first thing I think is how I'd love to have him/her as part of my family, and then I wonder if the dog is already spayed or not...because I'm wondering if I'd need to get it done.

This has been on my mind for quite a long long time...

That would be the worst reason to breed dogs. I'm sure some think just that way though.

I have had someone tell me they bred their dog to have puppies to give to family members. Well the dog died and so did the puppies. It isn't about just breeding and getting puppies.

Some people willt bred for the fast buck and have it backfire.
My last litter cost me about 250.00 after all expenses were paid not to mention my time which I get 37.80 an hour at my job. You should never be in it for the money but the love of the bred and to better the breed.

Having puppies to make ends meet is plain dumb

Default breeding

I can 99% guarantee if you breed to put food on the table, you will take short cuts...vet care, diet, supplies, grooming needs..on and on...and most will sell to the person with the money because the electric bill is due...

A few years back AARP magazine had an article how Seniors could make added income..they actually suggested dog breeding..can you believe it, boy did they get letters...

Nope nor would I.
It would not be a "money" maker because I would not be able to sell the puppy's they would "be mine all mine."
It would cost me more in the long run on food, vet, toys, clothes etc...
No not a good idea

To me that seems like a horrible reason to breed. I'm currently unemployed and though it's hard I make it work. I would go hungry before I ever let Lola run out of food. I would never think to get into breeding. Not for one second. And by next month it won't even be an option because I'm getting Lola spayed.

It seems really sad that people would resort to that sort of thing. I guess it's wrong to judge, I'm not in their shoes, but it still doesn't seem right.

You are not alone! I would never allow Sebastian to breed. I have had thousands of dollars of medical bills in the last year and it never crossed my mind. Sebastian is my baby, not a money maker and I was very relieved after he was neutered. Even though he is never outside alone and has not been in a situation where he could breed, I felt as though I needed to protect him all the time. Now that he has had his surgery, I know he is safe. I'm sure some people may think I am a bit strange, but when you love someone as much as I love my Sebastian, you will do anything and everything you can to make good decisions regarding their life!!

To all YT breeders: please don't take offense to what I have said! I have complete respect for what you guys do and I have seen the love you all have for your babies! My post is in regards to those who breed their dogs for money only, not for the love of the breed!!!

Well my 02 cents.. my last litter was my biggest.. I thought this was going to help me dig our of the red on my breeding.. well I lost three babies.. so now at one.. had $800.00 in vet bills, then yesterday I went to the vet for first shots at 75.00 dollars.. and another 10 for wormer for her..
so these people that say they can make it on producing litters need to write a book.. I was hoping only to get money back that would help towards maravihosa's costs.. and am still needing a new male.. so I do not get this at all...I breed for my love of this breed.. and I breed the best I can purchase to use in my small breeding program..
So I for one do not believe if you do it right.. go to the vet and make sure the female is cared for and looked after.. then the babies.. that takes money.. but if you cannot do that.. then why bother..

I have a co-worker that wanted one of my puppies to start breeding..I had told her they were already taken...A week later she bought s**t zoos and then used her and her roomates(story all in itself) to buy another and another Mastiff...which she already had one...so now, she lives in a development and one of her neighbors contacted the animal people about her having so many dogs! Her s**t dog just had a litter of 5 the other day...her roomate..who also works with me, calls me to tell me they just had pups and to make sure it would be ok for him to go to work so I run through the whelping common sense questions and it sounded like everything went well....sorry..getting sidetracked here....our last conversation was her asking me to go in with her since we have a bit of land....brace yourselves....to build an outside kennel with runs and do a *ahem*(puppy mill) breeding kennel. She proceeds to tell me how she cant work in this job forever that she wanted something easy to make money and wants to get more dogs but has to wait because of her f'n neighbors.
So I sat there and listened...then very politely said...I am and want to remain a very small breeder. I love the breed that I breed. I have waited over 12 years to own and breed and I'm really not in it for the money...yes the money is nice...if you make any after the fact but....she looks at me dumbfounded and says, oh, well I wanted to "get" yorkies but they are so expensive. Geez...what do you say to that? She is a very strongheaded, opinionated person...oh wait, thats me! jk..she is too! I only say things that I can word in just the right way so that I am not downgrading her but at the same time making her look like an ass. It never ceases to amaze me!

Any breeder on her can attest to what I am about to say.
1. You cant make money dog breeding...you usually either break even or go in the hole...IF you are doing it correctly and giving all the neccessary care.
2. Breeders dont breed for money, usually, they breed for the perfection of the breed.
3. It's hard to give up puppies...its like here stranger come buy my kid from me....its heartbreaking when you see a stranger carrying your little puppy away to a new home hoping just hoping that the people who just bought him/her were not lying about the intentions and are a good family.
4. Breeding is difficult and stressful

So I say to people who breed to "make a quick buck," your disgusting and you would make more money selling crap on ebay...hehe okay not crap cause I sell stuff on ebay b/c im a college student.

I won't be breeding from my Katie or Suzi. Katie will be spayed next month. (She had a fanthom pregnancy so had to wait.) Hopefully Suzi at 6 months.

Its very much like they do with babies in England. Some young girls have them so they can have a free flat and live off the state.

I think you must have to have lots of knowledge before attempting breeding.

I would absolutely never consider using my babies to support me. The very idea is repulsive

Nope! i got Kash neutered as soon as he was old enough, and never once thought of studding him out or buying a female to breed puppies. my mom actually suggested i stud him, but i said i didn't want to... (my mom and i don't agree on A LOT of things).

i may not have a lot of money, but i got Kash because i wanted a companion, not a money machine.

Breeding does not make you any money..... Back when bella had her pups I put more in prenatal care and vet checks on her and the pups. I ended up a couple hundred in the hole. But I didn't care because I still get to see the pups from time to time and I still call everyonce in a while to see how they are.

I dont look at is as going in the hole. I look at it as I took THE BEST care of them. When My skin kids go to the doctor and need meds we dont call that going in the hole. Well I look at my dogs the same way.
