| Help-I need input My mama yorkie had 5 babies 23 days ago. She is now not wanting to nurse. She growls at her babies & sometimes even snaps at them. We have to put her in the taxi with them so she can't get out to feed them. She whines and barks and wants to get out. Sometimes when the babies are just walking near her she growls & snaps at them. Do you think she is trying to wean them? I need info. PLEASE. Should I try feeding the babies something to supplement them? Thanks in advance, you guys are wonderful!!! |

| Congrats on your new babies. I'm unable to help other than to advise you to post this in the BREEDER section. Because I browse there every once in awhile, I'm sure someone will be able to help you. They all seem so knowledge.

| Are her nipples red and swollen? I'm not a breeder but my first thought would be that it's painful for her. Take her to the vet, I'd be worried about the pups becoming hypoglycemic. Good Luck, hope she's alright.

| At 23 days the pups should be ready to start eating a bit on their own though they aren't ready to be fully weaned yet. Maybe the pups are scratching Mom too much. You could trim their nails (just the tips) using human fingernail clippers. When my pups are ready for food, I start them out by soaking some dry food to make a watery mush and giving them that. Also, some Nutri-cal about twice a day wouldn't hurt. Just put a dab on your finger and let the pups lick it off. Even if Mom doesn't want to feed them as much, she should still be cleaning them so make sure they stay clean. Once they start eating food, things can get messy. |
