| I believe in-breeding = serious health problems

Yorkie Yakker | It is inbreeding. Serious health issues can arise. If the mother even carries them to full term, they usually die shortly after birth. My father in law has brother and sister beagles in the same kennel. I don't have a clue why, but he hasn't had them neutered or fixed, so they have had a few litters. Most of the time, none of them live, but one did and still is living and the only thing wrong with him is that he has a major underbite. |

| ok, so is that just brother and sisters or is that also parents and kids. i think one of my friends moms might not for sure had the father and a daughter or son and mom not sure, but those ways dont work either? just really curious about how it all works. i understand you cant inbreed, but i was just always told that it didnt work the same with dogs as it did with people

Donating YT 10K Club Member | When you in breed two siblings....any faults of either are doubled. Past reading I have done...has suggested no closer than aunt/nephew or uncle/niece. To answer your original question...yes, they can mate, there isn't a rule against it....but you'd better be very sure of the dog's faults or genetic history. They are getting a double dose of all of it.

| Some people do what's called line breeding This is true with dogs, cats, birds, just about anything. For example, you could breed a female with her grandfather to try to bring out a particular outstanding characteristic they both possessed. I don't particularly like the idea. The more genetically similar animals (including humans) are, the more likely you are to bring out bad recessive genes. That doesn't necessarily mean an inviable puppy. It could be a seemingly normal puppy that's later found to have a genetic defect. Many of these are either expensive or impossible to correct. (Just for a bit of trivia, this is the whole reason that it's now illegal in most, if not all, states to marry closer than a second or third cousin. I've met many people who think that's something the Christians forced on people because it's immoral. It has nothing to do with immorality. There was all kinds of incest in the Christian Bible. It evolved from the long-past French tradition of marrying only within the royal family. They finally figured out that's why so many of the male heirs were turning out to be hemophiliacs. Duh!) |
