| Questions regarding Heat My 7 month old yorkie is going into heat. This will be the first time I have owned a dog when this happens and I would like to know of any suggestions to make it easier for my fiance' and I. Libby is of course an indoor dog. She is still not 100% potty trained for outdoors, so we still leave puppy pads in a couple rooms when we are not home. She definetly uses them because when we come home there is stuff on them. I went out this morning, and when I came home there was spots of blood on her pad. I've heard the yorkies go into heat at 6 months, and Libby is 7 months, so I was expecting it at any time. How long does it last? Is there anything I should know? She seems to be acting a lil different also. She usually loves other dogs, esp her yorkie friend Kobe two houses away, but lately she growls at him when they "play". Does it affect their moods? lol Last night I took her to play with a 4 month old toy poodle - female- and she even was growling at her. Usually she LOVES to play. I have a doggie diaper bc we had taken a trip where Libby had to come on the plane with us....so I had her wear the diaper on the plane. Should I put it on her to help with the bleeding? Or do they not really bleed that much? Any help or suggestions would be awesome! |

| Heat cycles last about 3 weeks. That doesnt mean she will bleed the whole time but she will be able to conceive during that time. You'll probably notice her licking that area alot. They do this to keep themselves clean. Also, you may notice her private area starting to stick out. This is normal and nothing to worry about. Just try to keep her away from males dogs at this point. If you have any male dogs in the house, you're not gonna get any sleep until her heat cycle is over. The male will stay up all night long every night, howling and whining lol Mood swings are normal. Just like women when they have their period, females in heat can get irritable as well. It's all normal. I would keep them seperate though. If you dont plan on breeding her, I would suggest getting her fixed once her cycle is over. She will no longer go into heat and you wont have to worry about unplanned conceptions.

| Thanks, that helps a lot. She is our only dog, so I'm glad I dont have to worry about a male keeping us up! lol My fiance' wanted her to have a litter and then breed her, but I argued that because I think she is too small. I dont want to risk her life just to have another puppy. His mom wants one and my best friend wants one, so he wanted her to have some puppies to give to each of them and keep one for ourselves. But after talking with him and the vet, we have decided to get her spayed, but we knew she would go into heat soon and had heard you can't spay them while they are in heat. We plan on having her spayed after this is over. Thanks again! |

| Yeah I was NOT a happy camper for 3 LONG weeks. All night long Prince would howl and whimper. Nothing would help quiet him. I had him in the bathroom for a while to quiet the sounds (its a large bathroom) but he almost dug through the door. He wanted a piece....REAL BAD! lol He ended up getting it too...a few times. Needless to say we have puppies. Sadly though, Angel is getting fixed tomorrow
