Northwest does not give out tags. I paid for my boys and asked for tags and the woman told me they don't do that just go through. Thats why I was bummed I paid. Also the airline does not require health certs.

No... security is looking for weapons and dangerous things, they could care less about a dog. Plus security works for the airport... they have no idea what airline allows dogs or not or if there is a fee and if you paid it. Believe me, I lived the nightmare of sweating and hoping and praying I'd get to go to my moms for xmas when I was flying 2 dogs in 1 carrier by myself when it was 'against airline policy' but noone even looked. They try to be STRICT on the website to deter people from trying... but those who do do it generally they are not bad to work with. Ive never heard of ANYONE getting turned away yet. Im sure it happens sometimes though.

Health certificates aren't required by any airline. Those are a state requirement.

What kind of carrier do you use on the airplane? I used to get away with that years ago with my poodle because she didn't make a sound either but I would be afraid to try that with Lily because she has never flown and she might scream the whole way across country???lol I am flying in Sept. on United and it is $100 ea. way. I'll see how she does going and how they are doing things and deal with it on the way back different maybe. I wish Southwest let you take pets too because that is how I always flew but they don't let you. Good luck!!

American Airlines - Number of Pets Allowed
Only one pet kennel per ticketed passenger may be accepted for travel in the cabin. The kennel may contain two (2) dogs or two (2) cats but they must be the same species, ages between 8-weeks and 6-months, and weigh less than 20 lbs.

Unless I'm reading it incorrectly they are addressing traveling with two pets at the same time. I have flown American frequently with Lucy and they know her age (over a year) as it is on her health certificate.

Midwest Airlines is an exception to this rule - They asked for her health certificate when we went to KC. Not only do they require it but they are also picky about it. My vet forgot to date the certificate (2 days old) and they made me call them and fax them a dated certificate before they let me fly.

Taken from Midwest Airline's website - Vet Health Certificate. Upon check-in, you must present a veterinarian health certificate that includes current vaccination records and is dated within 10 days of travel.

I don't have the opportunity to fly Midwest often, I wish I did as they are very comfortable. One interesting note on them - They have a frequent flyer plan for pets. Six Legs and you get a free round trip ticket for them I thought that was very nice.

We flew with Biggie Smalls last year with Delta. They were great! They did not ask for the health certificate, but we had one just in case. I think back then it was only $50.00 each way. Looks like they are charging $100.00 each way now. Yikes!

I flew United and Northwest when I brought Angel home. Northwest did give out a tag that was attached to her bag and the airline did check the tag before I boarded.

You will run the risk of losing your flight if you don't make the reservation before hand. Northwest does not allow you to pay for the pet when you make your reservation, you must go to the ticket counter. But every major airline that does allow pets has a rule as to how many can be in the cabin during any flight and it is usually two. So, if you don't make the reservation beforehand, get told at the boarding area that you have to go back and pay and there are already other pets on that flight, you won't be able to fly.

It is also a smart idea to always have your health certificate. Most airlines have it is a mandatory condition if you look on their website. Again, IF they ask to see it and you don't have it, you're going to be turned away.

BTW, the fee for United and Northwest was $80 each way last January.....

Animal Smiley 019 American Airlines

Scooter and I normally fly American Airlines. Their price was $80 but with all the new fees has changed to $100. We flew last week and will fly back home next week. We stayed within the US so I am sure international flights are more expesive. It is pricey but at least your babies get to fly with you so you know they are safe and healthy.

Good luck!
